Clueless: Housing and Urban Development Secretary Ben Carson argues President Trump is not a racist because the servants at Trump’s Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida love him.

Politico reports:

Housing Secretary Ben Carson appeared to stray from prepared remarks as he introduced Donald Trump on Friday, declaring that the president “is not a racist” and pointing to how he treats the members and service workers at his Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida.

Speaking at the beginning of a North Carolina event touting the Trump administration’s Opportunity Zone program, Carson introduced Trump by declaring that Trump is not racist. Carson said:

You know, talking to the people who drive the cars and park the cars at Mar-a-Lago, they love him – the people who wash the dishes… you know, people say he’s a racist – he is not a racist.

Carson’s remarks border on the idiotic, while tacitly embracing racist stereotypes. Yet this is not the first time Carson has insulted the intelligence of reasonable people. For example, in his debut as secretary of Housing and Urban Development, Carson explained to department employees that slaves were actually hard working immigrants:

That’s what America is about, a land of dreams and opportunity. There were other immigrants who came here in the bottom of slave ships, worked even longer, even harder for less. But they too had a dream that one day their sons, daughters, grandsons, granddaughters, great-grandsons, great-granddaughters, might pursue prosperity and happiness in this land.

In addition, Carson publicly rejects evolution and climate change, despite overwhelming scientific evidence to the contrary.

Carson also believes that the pyramids were built by the biblical figure Joseph to store grain.

In the past, Carson compared abortion to slavery, saying rape victims seeking abortions are “perverted,” while declaring he would “love” to see Roe vs. Wade overturned, and wants all abortion outlawed, even in cases of rape or incest.

Bottom line: Housing Secretary Ben Carson is a clueless clown, and argues that Trump is not a racist, because Trump’s servants love him.

Ben Carson leads Trump cabinet in prayer, thanking the Lord for corporate tax cuts that will hurt the middle class while making the rich richer.

In a deplorable display of Christian privilege, Housing and Urban Development Secretary Ben Carson led President Donald Trump and members of his Cabinet in a Christian prayer Wednesday, thanking God for a tax bill that benefits the rich while ultimately hurting the poor and middle class.

An obnoxious President Trump invited Carson to lead the Cabinet in prayer after bragging about his new tax plan. Before the prayer, Trump told reporters they could stay because they needed to hear the prayer most:

You can stay if you want because you need it more than we do.

In his prayer, Carson thanked God for “unity” between House Republicans and Senate Republicans, and “for a President and for cabinet members who are courageous, who are willing to face the winds of controversy in order to provide a better future for those who come behind us.”

Carson did not comment on the fact that poor children would lose their health insurance as a result of the sweeping tax bill.

Here’s the entire prayer:

Our kind Father in heaven, we’re so thankful for the opportunities and the freedom that you’ve granted us in this country. We thank you for the president and for Cabinet members who are courageous, who are willing to face the winds of controversy in order to provide a better future for those who come behind us. We’re thankful for the unity in Congress, that presented an opportunity for our economy to expand, so we can fight the corrosive debt that has been destroying our future. And we hope that that unity will spread even beyond party lines, so that people recognize we have a nation that is worth saving. And nations divided against themselves cannot stand. In this time of discord, distrust and dishonesty, we ask that you will give us a spirit of gratitude, compassion and common sense. And give us the wisdom to be able to guide this great nation in the future. We ask in the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit, Amen.

Bottom line: Ben Carson leads Trump cabinet in prayer, and thanks God for corporate tax cuts that will benefit the rich while ultimately damaging poor and middle-class Americans.

Open mouth – insert foot: Trump’s Housing Secretary Ben Carson insults the intelligence by claiming poverty is “a state of  mind.”

In yet another bizarre statement from the daffy Christian extremist, Housing and Urban Development Secretary Ben Carson calls poverty “a state of  mind” while speaking with Armstrong Williams, a friend and advisor to Carson, as well as a conservative media personality.

During a SiriusXM radio interview that aired on Wednesday, Carson told Williams:

I think poverty to a large extent is also a state of mind.

On the program, the Housing Secretary was asked about what could be done to reduce the number of people living in poverty. Carson replied:

If everybody had a mother like mine, nobody would be in poverty. She was a person who absolutely would not accept status of victim.

Carson continued:

I think poverty to a large extent is also a state of mind. You take somebody who has the right mindset, you can take everything from them and put them on the street and I guarantee you in a little while they’ll be right back up there. And you take somebody with the wrong mindset, you can give them everything in the world, they’ll work their way right back down to the bottom.

In other words, according to Carson, poor people are poor because they choose to be poor, and if they would only changes their mental state they would no longer be poor.

The backlash to Carson’s cavalier and flippant remarks about the suffering of others has been severe.

A viral tweet from celebrity George Takei expresses the general outrage:

(Ben Carson says that poverty is a “state of mind.” You know what else is a state of mind? Always being a blithering idiot.)

This is not the first time Carson has insulted the poor while on duty as Trump’s Housing Secretary. Earlier this month, Carson said he wants homeless shelters to be uncomfortable so poor people will try harder to improve their economic status.

Carson tried to justify his cruelty by calling it “compassion”:

Compassion, Mr. Carson explained …, means not giving people “a comfortable setting that would make somebody want to say: ‘I’ll just stay here. They will take care of me.’”

Perhaps more disturbing, in his debut as secretary of Housing and Urban Development earlier this spring, Carson explained to department employees that slaves were actually hard working immigrants:

That’s what America is about, a land of dreams and opportunity. There were other immigrants who came here in the bottom of slave ships, worked even longer, even harder for less. But they too had a dream that one day their sons, daughters, grandsons, granddaughters, great-grandsons, great-granddaughters, might pursue prosperity and happiness in this land.

As to be expected, the thoughtless and idiotic remark was immediately condemned on social media and elsewhere.

However, Carson is well known for making thoughtless and idiotic remarks. For example, Carson publicly rejects evolution and climate change, despite overwhelming scientific evidence to the contrary.

Previously leading scientist and atheist Richard Dawkins referred to Carson as a “disgrace” for denying evolution.

And as a GOP presidential candidate in 2016, Carson said he would use the Department of Education to censor liberal speech on college campuses if elected president.

As Trump’s Housing Secretary, Carson oversees a department that handles housing for millions of low-income Americans. As such, his absurd insensitivity, and outright cruelty towards the poor, is even more appalling and despicable.

The fact that Carson himself was born into poverty, only compounds his moral failure to demonstrate compassion and empathy towards the unfortunate.

Bottom line: Carson is a clueless, cruel, Christian, a man who simply lacks the temperament and intellect to be the head of the Department of Housing and Urban Development.

For Secretary of Housing and Urban Development Ben Carson, Christian love means the poor must be punished.

The New York Times reports that Secretary of Housing and Urban Development Ben Carson wants homeless shelters to be uncomfortable so poor people will try harder to improve their economic status.

According to that report, on a recent tour of homeless shelters Carson was happy if the shelter was obviously an uncomfortable place to live, while the conservative Christian apologist appeared put off if a shelter seemed too comfortable.

The Times reports Carson was happy to see homeless people forced to sleep in a room stacked with dozens of bunk beds and no televisions:

[Carson] nodded, plainly happy, as officials explained how they had stacked dozens of bunk beds inside a homeless shelter and purposefully did not provide televisions.

On the flip side, Carson seemed annoyed when they toured an apartment complex for homeless vets, lamenting the decent standard of living enjoyed by the vets, and complaining that the facility lacked “only pool tables.”

The Times reports Carson tried to justify his cruelty by calling it “compassion”:

Compassion, Mr. Carson explained in an interview, means not giving people “a comfortable setting that would make somebody want to say: ‘I’ll just stay here. They will take care of me.’”

In other words, Carson wants housing for homeless people to be uncomfortable so low-income Americans won’t become reliant on the government for a helping hand. It is a cruel and mean-spirited line of thought used by many conservative Christians to further punish and stigmatize the poor.

Carson is off to a rocky start as HUD Secretary. In his debut as secretary of Housing and Urban Development in earlier this spring Carson explained to department employees that slaves were hard working immigrants:

That’s what America is about, a land of dreams and opportunity. There were other immigrants who came here in the bottom of slave ships, worked even longer, even harder for less. But they too had a dream that one day their sons, daughters, grandsons, granddaughters, great-grandsons, great-granddaughters, might pursue prosperity and happiness in this land.

Bottom line: Carson is a clueless, cruel, Christian, a man who simply lacks the temperament and intellect to be the head of the Department of Housing and Urban Development.

Ben Carson, newly confirmed Housing and Urban Development Secretary, calls slaves “immigrants” while speaking to department employees on Monday.

In his debut as secretary of Housing and Urban Development Carson explained to department employees that slaves were hard working immigrants:

That’s what America is about, a land of dreams and opportunity. There were other immigrants who came here in the bottom of slave ships, worked even longer, even harder for less. But they too had a dream that one day their sons, daughters, grandsons, granddaughters, great-grandsons, great-granddaughters, might pursue prosperity and happiness in this land.

The thoughtless remark was immediately condemned on social media, as Carson’s name dominated the top of the trending list on Twitter.

The Anne Frank Center for Mutual Respect, a civil and human rights organization, issued a searing statement calling Carson’s remarks “offensive.”

A statement from executive director Steven Goldstein read in part:

No, Secretary Carson. Slaves didn’t immigrate to America. They were brought here violently, against their own will, and lived here without freedom.

The faux pas should come as no surprise. Ben Carson is an idiot: a man willing to deny scientific truth to preserve religious superstition.

In the past the Christian extremist has compared abortion to slavery, saying rape victims seeking abortions are “perverted,” while declaring he would “love” to see Roe vs. Wade overturned, and wants all abortion outlawed, even in cases of rape or incest.

Carson also rejects evolution and climate change, despite overwhelming scientific evidence to the contrary. Previously, leading scientist Richard Dawkins referred to Carson as a “disgrace” for denying evolution.

Adding insult to injury, Carson also believes the ridiculous claim that the pyramids were built by the biblical figure Joseph to store grain.

Critics note that Carson is a dangerous religious extremist, and worry that his extremism will likely impede his ability to serve Americans that do not share his Christian faith.

In particular, Carson has made dangerous and inflammatory statements concerning the LGBT community, and has promised that one of his top concerns as HUD Secretary will be the nation’s “spiritual infrastructure.”

Despite Carson’s serious problems, the Senate confirmed him to be President Trump’s secretary of Housing and Urban Development late last week.

Bottom line: Referring to slaves as immigrants is an insult to the intelligence, and a despicable attempt to whitewash the history of the United States.

As HUD secretary creationist Ben Carson promises to strengthen nation’s “spiritual infrastructure.”

Dr. Ben Carson will be nominated as the next secretary of the Department of Housing and Urban Development, the Trump transition team announced Monday.

In a statement President-elect Donald Trump said:

I am thrilled to nominate Dr. Ben Carson as our next Secretary of the US Department of Housing and Urban Development. Ben Carson has a brilliant mind and is passionate about strengthening communities and families within those communities. We have talked at length about my urban renewal agenda and our message of economic revival, very much including our inner cities. Ben shares my optimism about the future of our country and is part of ensuring that this is a Presidency representing all Americans. He is a tough competitor and never gives up.

Accepting the position, Carson said:

I am honored to accept the opportunity to serve our country in the Trump administration. I feel that I can make a significant contribution particularly by strengthening communities that are most in need. We have much work to do in enhancing every aspect of our nation and ensuring that our nation’s housing needs are met.

Last month Carson said he would turn down a cabinet position in President-elect Donald Trump’s administration after reports circulated that he had been tapped for the position of either Secretary of Health and Human Services, or Secretary of Education.

At the time Carson’s spokesperson told The Hill:

Dr. Carson feels he has no government experience, he’s never run a federal agency. The last thing he would want to do was take a position that could cripple the presidency.

However, in a post to his Facebook page last month, Carson hinted at the news that he would be the new HUD secretary, writing:

Winning the presidential election was only the first step for those who love traditional America and do not wish to fundamentally change it. Now the hard work begins of restoring the values that made us great. We must bring back the compassion and the unity that empowers us and banish the divisiveness that weakens us. After serious discussions with the Trump transition team, I feel that I can make a significant contribution particularly to making our inner cities great for everyone. We have much work to do in strengthening every aspect of our nation and ensuring that both our physical infrastructure and our spiritual infrastructure is solid. An announcement is forthcoming about my role in helping to make America great again.

Carson’s concern with the nation’s “spiritual infrastructure” is alarming, given his record as a Christian extremist willing to deny scientific truth in order to satisfy his religious superstitions.

For example, Carson rejects evolution and climate change, despite overwhelming scientific evidence to the contrary. Previously leading scientist and atheist Richard Dawkins referred to Carson as a “disgrace” for denying evolution.

Carson also believes that the pyramids were built by the biblical figure Joseph to store grain.

In the past Carson compared abortion to slavery, saying rape victims seeking abortions are “perverted,” while declaring he would “love” to see Roe vs. Wade overturned, and wants all abortion outlawed, even in cases of rape or incest.

And as a GOP presidential candidate in 2016, Carson said he would use the Department of Education to censor liberal speech on college campuses if elected president.

Bottom line: Carson was right when he stated he was not qualified to run a federal agency, and he is not qualified to be the head of the Department of Housing and Urban Development.

After being tapped for a cabinet position, Ben Carson declines.

Creationist Ben Carson has turned down a cabinet position in President-elect Donald Trump’s administration.

According to Ben Carson’s top adviser, Armstrong Williams, Carson will not accept a Cabinet position from Trump. Williams told ABC News that Carson “was offered whatever he wanted,” but felt he couldn’t run an entire agency with his lack of government experience.

Williams told The Hill in a phone call:

Dr. Carson was never offered a specific position, but everything was open to him.

In particular, it seems that Carson had his choice of being either Secretary of Health and Human Services, or Secretary of Education.

Speaking with Politico, Williams said:

It was clear that he (Carson) had his pick of what he wanted to do.

Williams added:

He has no interest in a cabinet position, or any position in the administration.

In a surprising moment of clarity, Williams told The Hill:

Dr. Carson feels he has no government experience, he’s never run a federal agency. The last thing he would want to do was take a position that could cripple the presidency.

Kudos to Carson for recognizing his limitations. Although it may be that Carson refused a Cabinet position because serving in a white nationalist administration was a bridge too far for even Carson. Or again, it may be that Carson is simply more interested in making money than serving his country.

For the record, Carson would make a terrible Secretary of Health and Human Services, Secretary of Education, or any other Cabinet position. The fact is, Carson has a well documented history of substituting religious superstition for scientific truth.

Ben Carson, a man willing to deny scientific truth to preserve religious superstition, is on his way to being the next Secretary of Education.

On Wednesday, BuzzFeed News published a list of names President-elect Donald Trump’s transition team has put together for cabinet positions. On that list was Ben Carson for Secretary of Education.

For the record, Carson is not qualified for the position. He has a well documented history of substituting religious superstition for scientific truth.

Carson rejects evolution and climate change, despite overwhelming scientific evidence to the contrary.

Carson was once ridiculed after suggesting that if Noah could build an Ark, he could be president.

And as a GOP presidential candidate in 2016, Carson said he would use the Department of Education to censor liberal speech on college campuses if elected president.

Bottom line: Carson is not qualified to be Secretary of Education, and if given the chance it seems certain he would exploit his position to promote his conservative Christian superstitions.

UPDATE: Ben Carson Declines Cabinet Position In Trump Administration

Ben Carson ties Hillary Clinton to Lucifer at the Republican National Convention.

The retired neurosurgeon and former GOP presidential candidate went on a rant against “secular progressives,” Hillary Clinton, Saul Alinsky, and Lucifer while speaking at last night’s Republican National Convention.

Carson attacked Clinton because she wrote her 1969 Wellesley undergraduate thesis on Saul Alinsky, a legendary liberal community organizer that conservatives love to hate.

Carson told his Republican audience:

Let me tell you something about Saul Alinsky. He wrote a book called Rules for Radicals. On the dedication page, it acknowledges Lucifer, the original radical who gained his own kingdom.

Now think about that. This is a nation where our founding document, the Declaration of Independence, talks about certain inalienable rights that come from our Creator. This is a nation where our Pledge of Allegiance says we are one nation “Under God.” This is a nation where every coin in our pocket and every bill in our wallet says “In God We Trust.”

Not surprising, the conservative crowd cheered when Carson said “Under God” and “In God We Trust.”

Carson continued, asking the Republican audience:

So are we willing to elect someone as president who has as their role model someone who acknowledges Lucifer?

For more on Carson and the Trump campaign, see: Ben Carson Sold His Endorsement For Position In Future Trump Administration

Carson went on to warn the audience:

The secular progressive agenda is antithetical to the principles of the founding of this nation. And if we continue to allow them to take God out of our lives, God will remove himself from us. We will not be blessed, and our nation will go down the tubes. And we will be responsible for that. We don’t want that to happen.

Earlier today, in a follow up interview with CNN, Carson defended connecting Hillary Clinton to Lucifer.

Bottom line: Carson’s rhetoric claiming “the secular progressive agenda is antithetical to the principles of the founding of this nation” demonstrates a profound failure to understand the secular principles upon which this nation was founded. However, his attempt to connect Clinton to Lucifer, is just plain nutty.

It wasn’t God, it was selfish ambition that motivated Ben Carson to endorse Donald Trump.

After originally claiming he endorsed Donald Trump because he received a sign from God, Ben Carson now admits he sold his endorsement after being promised a position in a future Trump administration.

Dr. Ben Carson, who endorsed Donald Trump’s presidential candidacy last Friday, now says he didn’t want to endorse Trump, but Trump promised him a position in his future administration in exchange for the endorsement..

On Monday, Carson told the conservative online site NewsMax TV that Trump was never his first choice, but that Trump had promised him a position in a future administration.

Appearing on “The Steve Malzberg Show” on Monday, Carson said he was assured by the billionaire candidate that he would be “doing things” in at least an “advisory capacity” during a Trump administration.

In the interview, Carson implied Trump had promised him a role in his administration. Talking Points Memo reports on the conversation:

“[Trump] will surround himself with very good people,” the retired neurosurgeon said.

“And will one of them be Dr. Ben Carson?” Malzberg asked.

“I will be doing things as well, yeah,” Carson responded.

When pressed whether the role would be “in the administration,” Carson said it would be “certainly in an advisory capacity.”

“That’s been determined? When you sat down with him that was discussed?” Malzberg asked.

“Yes,” Carson said. When the host asked whether he was offered a Cabinet role, Carson said the details are still “very liquid” and declined to offer specifics.

Think Progress reports Carson may be guilty of a felony, noting:

Federal law expressly prohibits candidates from directly or indirectly promising “the appointment of any person to any public or private position or employment, for the purpose of procuring support in his candidacy.” The penalty for violations could include fines or a year in jail — two years if the violation was willful.

Bottom line: Carson may or may not have committed a crime for selling his endorsement. However, one thing is certain, despite all the Christian posturing, when push comes to shove, Carson is just another sleazy politician looking out for himself. One almost feels sorry for all the gullible rubes who believed in the fraud.
