For conservative Christians, the “Obama homosexual revolution” means civil war.

Rick Wiles, speaking on his Trunews program earlier this week, lamented the Obama administration’s new directive telling every public school district in the country to allow transgender students to use the bathrooms that match their gender identity, and warned the decision would lead to civil war.

On his popular program Wiles said the nation is headed for civil war, and it’s all President Obama’s fault:

I’m going to tell you where I think we’re going: civil war. I believe this is the opening shot from Obama for civil war.

Referring to the Obama administration as “the command center of the Obama homosexual revolution” Wiles predicted that most parents and school officials would “cave” and “sacrifice their children at the altar of sexual perversion,” while those good Christians who protested would be “beaten in the streets with batons” and “hosed down with firehoses.”

Wiles added:

I’m not calling for violence. I’m calling for massive civil disobedience. Shut down the system. My God, what do we have to do? They’re coming after your innocent children! Just when do you get off of your fat rear end and do something? I’m so sick and tired of these cowards in the churches. Lazy, worthless cowards! They’re coming for your children! They’re coming right into your schools to pervert your children!

Wiles continued by making the outrageous claim that President Obama (and Satan) intend to “rape your children”:

We’re living in a funhouse. In a house of horrors. The president — the fake president, he’s a fake president, he’s not a legitimate American president, he’s a fake and he’s been allowed to do these wicked things for eight years because there’s been no resistance to him, and now he’s going for it, he’s got the pedal to the metal. He’s coming into the schools to rape your children. Let’s be honest about it. Satan wants to rape your children. I’m telling you, there’s going to be confrontation in the country. There will be a group of people who just say, ‘This is it, I’m done, at this point, we resist and we’re pushing back.’

Bottom line: Conservative Christians continue to panic as transgender bathroom hysteria fuels dangerous fantasies of civil war and Christian persecution.

Fueled by irrational fear and bigotry, over one million Christians boycott Target.

More than one million people have signed a petition promising to boycott Target because of its new transgender-inclusive bathroom policy.

The petition, sponsored by the American Family Association, a Christian hate group, promotes propaganda and hate speech against transsexual people while pretending to protect children.

Ostensibly, the petition claims to protect “women and children,” but in reality it is a thinly veiled expression of Christian bigotry and hatred towards the transgender community.

The petition advocates for a boycott against Target after the company released a statement in support of transgender people’s right to use the bathroom. In the statement Target says it encourages transgender people to use whichever restroom or fitting room that matches their gender identity, saying inclusivity is a “core belief at Target.”

Yet what should have been a non-controversial statement of tolerance set off a firestorm of Christian panic, and the petition and boycott campaign against Target is the result of that panic.

In response to the transgender bathroom hysteria aimed at Target, a counter petition at MoveOn.org has been launched. Currently the petition has over a 100,000 signatures and reads:

I pledge to support Target and any other business that stands up for transgender rights and accommodates transgender people in their restroom use.

The boycott and petition against Target is part of a shameful and vile attack on transgender people that promotes a discredited and malicious myth that transgender people using public bathrooms pose some sort of threat. However, the facts show that transgender people using public bathrooms do not pose a threat to others.

Yet despite the facts, the myth continues. Last week a notorious conservative Christian lawyer threatened transgender bathroom users with gun violence. Anita Staver, president of the theocratic law group The Liberty Counsel, issued a thinly veiled death threat to transgender people via Twitter. Staver said she will carry a gun to Target so she can shoot transgender bathroom users.

In response to the hate, good people need to reject the transgender bathroom hysteria sweeping the nation, and stand up for transgender individuals and those who support transgender individuals, like Target.

Bottom line: Target’s brave stand for fair treatment of all citizens should be rewarded, not punished.

Transgender bathroom hysteria fuels Christian bigotry: #BoycottTarget goes viral.

Christian bigots have launched a boycott against Target after the company released a statement earlier this week in support of transgender people.

In the statement Target says it encourages transgender people to use whichever restroom or fitting room that matches their gender identity, saying inclusivity is a “core belief at Target.”

Yet what should have been a non-controversial statement of tolerance set off a firestorm of Christian panic.

In response to Target’s statement of inclusivity, The American Family Association, a conservative Christian advocacy group, started a petition on social media using the hashtag #BoycottTarget.

As of Sunday morning the petition had already gathered over 327,000 signatures and had been widely shared by conservative Christians via social media. The petition reads:

Target’s store policy endangers women and children by allowing men to frequent women’s facilities.

Until Target makes the safety of women and children a priority, I will shop elsewhere.

Ostensibly, the petition claims to protect “women and children,” but in reality it is a thinly veiled expression of Christian bigotry and hatred towards the transgender community.

The petition plays on the discredited and malicious myth that transgender people using public bathrooms pose some sort of threat. However, the facts show that transgender people using public bathrooms do not pose a threat to others.

A recent report issued by Media Matters cites experts from twelve states – including law enforcement officials, state human rights workers, and sexual assault victims advocates – who debunk the myth that transgender non-discrimination laws and policies have any relation to incidents of sexual assault or harassment in public restrooms.

In fact, if one is concerned about public bathroom safety, it is Republican politicians, and not transgender people, that are most likely to be engaged in sexual misconduct. Multiple reports indicate that no transgender individual has ever been arrested for sexual misconduct in a public bathroom, while at least three Republican lawmakers have been arrested for sexual misconduct in a public restroom.

Bottom line: The irrational backlash against Target’s humane policy is another example of transgender bathroom hysteria. It is a myth that transgender people pose a danger in public bathrooms, a myth promoted by conservative Christians who hate what they don’t understand.

A “small” bomb exploded in a women’s bathroom at a Target store in Illinois.

No one was hurt in the explosion, and a  44-year-old woman described as a person of interest was taken into custody, according to the Chicago Tribune.

While the bomb caused minor damage, no person was injured. The bomb was made with a plastic bottle but did not contain nails, tacks or other projectiles, according to police.

Many have speculated the bomb was related to Target’s transgender-inclusive bathroom policy, a policy that has sent some conservative Christians into an apoplectic rage.

Recently Target upset conservative Christians by announcing that transgender customers would be permitted to use the bathrooms that they are most comfortable using.

However, local police reject any connection between the bombing and the company’s transgender friendly policy. The following is an excerpt from a statement concerning the bombing issued by the city of Evanston:

On Wednesday, June 8, 2016 at approximately 4:08 PM, the Evanston Police and Fire Departments were called to the Target Store in the 2200 block of Howard Street for a minor explosion that occurred in the women’s bathroom.  There were no reported injuries and the damage was confined to a stall inside the bathroom.  Police and Fire personnel secured the scene and requested assistance from the Cook County Bomb Squad prior to collecting any evidence.  A preliminary examination revealed the explosion may have initiated from a plastic bottle that was observed in the stall.  There were no threats or other suspicious activity prior to, or since the incident occurred.

In the course of their investigation, detectives took a 44 year old female person of interest into custody.  The investigation is still ongoing and no charges have been filed.  The detectives are not currently looking for any known additional suspects and as this point there is no indication that the incident is related to any policies that the Target store has in place.  This release will be updated when new information is obtained.

Despite the police report there is good reason to suspect a disgruntled Christian is behind the explosion, given the rhetoric coming from leading Christian conservatives.

Late last month Focus on the Family founder James Dobson actually told his audience that transgender people using public restrooms should be shot and killed.

And last April, Anita Staver, president of the conservative Christian law group The Liberty Counsel, issued a thinly veiled death threat to transgender people via Twitter, declaring that she would carry a gun to Target so she could shoot any transgender bathroom users, implicitly encouraging others to do the same.

In fact, fueled by irrational fear and bigotry, over one million Christians have promised to boycott Target because of its transgender-inclusive bathroom policy.

The boycott is being sponsored by the American Family Association, a Christian hate group that promotes propaganda and hate speech against transsexual people while pretending to protect children.

Evangelist James Dobson says transgender people using public bathrooms should be shot.

In an anti-Obama rant the Focus on the Family founder said that transgender people using public restrooms should be shot. Writing for World Net Daily Dobson complained about President Obama’s order to “every public school in America to open all its bathroom facilities including those that are in use by a member of the opposite sex.” Dobson wrote:

Would you remain passive after knowing that a strange-looking man, dressed like a woman, has been peering over toilet cubicles to watch your wife in a private moment? What should be done to the pervert who was using mirrors to watch women and girls in their stalls? If you are a dad, I pray you will protect your little girls from men who walk in unannounced, unzip their pants and urinate in front of them. If this had happened 100 years ago, someone might have been shot. Where is today’s manhood? God help us!

In short, Dobson is giving Christians permission to shoot transgender people using a public bathroom.

Raw Story notes that in his post Dobson comes dangerously close to echoing the same rhetoric that was used by white men in the south when organizing a lynching.

Warning that the Obama administration’s recent directive on the rights of transgender students could bring down all of Western civilization, Dobson asked:

Have we gone absolutely mad? Did it upset you when the president of the United States ordered every public school in America to open all its bathroom facilities including those that are in use by a member of the opposite sex?

Dobson continues:

The president’s order made me furious, and then sick to my stomach. How dare this man do something so audacious and unthinkable!

Dobson accuses Obama of “warping our children” and “wielding dictatorial powers never envisioned in the law” –  a “tyrant” who is “is determined to change Western civilization forever.”

Dobson goes on to lament the changing world, writing:

How the world has changed! Who would have believed a day would come during my lifetime when boys could meander into the private sanctuary of girls’ toilets, or that it would someday be a civil right for men to use women’s locker rooms and showers without permission or apology? Imagine sex-absorbed junior high boys ogling the bodies of developing pubescent girls or standing beside them in their showers. Have we gone absolutely mad? What ever happened to modesty, safety, and Christian mores?

Did it upset you when the president of the United States ordered every public school in America to open all its bathroom facilities including those that are in use by a member of the opposite sex? The president’s order made me furious, and then sick to my stomach. How dare this man do something so audacious and unthinkable! His letter from the White House carried an implied threat to withhold federal money from local schools, which rocked the halls of public education. Who is this politician that is spending your hard-earned tax dollars to manipulate school officials, anyway? Who is it that is warping our children? It is Barack Obama, one of the worst presidents in American history, and it is time we stood up and said so!

Dobson attacks Target’s transgender-friendly bathroom policy:

(You are probably aware that Target has taken a stand to allow persons who “self-identify” as a man or woman to use the restroom of their choice. In addition to Target Stores, the following retailers have also decided, against the objection of their customers, to create “gender neutral” bathrooms: Starbucks, Ross, Walgreens, Toys “R” Us, and Barnes & Noble. My wife, Shirley, and I will no longer patronize these stores, and I hope millions of others will do likewise.)

And continues his demonization of Obama:

Let’s talk more about Barack Obama, who is a tyrant in many ways. How dare he assault centuries of modesty and moral beliefs! By what authority does he tell parents and school officials what to teach children under their care? Christian parents, does this outrageous order violate something deep within your sense of propriety? The president has already maneuvered the courts to undermine a 5,000-year-old definition of marriage, after experiencing his infamous epiphany. Now he is determined to change Western civilization forever. He becomes more reckless and defiant as his second term comes to an end. Never has an American president been so absorbed with the use and abuse of power, and unfortunately, he still has seven months to go. What is next?

Dobson concludes by urging parents to protect their children from ideas he considers to be dangerous:

Clearly, there are serious implications here for mothers and fathers. I urge you to protect your boys and girls from those who are espousing these views. Shield them from gender feminism and from those who would confuse their sexuality. They will be under increasing political pressure in years to come.

Dobson’s rant is a long and sustained howl from a conservative Christian angry that his privilege has been challenged. The fact that he is giving Christian conservatives permission to shoot transgender people using a public bathroom is despicable and irresponsible: a potent reminder of the bigotry, prejudice, and danger transgender people must face on a daily basis.

Bottom line: Dobson is dangerous.

Glenn Beck complains transgender bathrooms are part of a plot to normalize pedophilia.

Today on his radio program a distraught Glenn Beck claimed transgender bathrooms will lead to the normalization of pedophilia.

Reacting to the recent announcement by Hershey Park that its guests and employees are allowed to use the restrooms that match the gender with which they identify, Beck went on a rant on his radio show this morning, complaining that transgender bathrooms  “are being jammed down our throat.”

(Question: Why is it that conservatives always worry about things being “jammed down our throat” when complaining about equal rights for LGBT people?)

On his program Beck declared:

If you don’t stand up now. I guarantee you the next thing that will be mainstreamed will be pedophilia.

Beck tried to distinguish between marriage equality and transgender-friendly bathrooms, insisting the push for transgender equality is “not normal,” while arguing marriage equality for lesbians and gay men was inevitable.

Beck opined:

Transgender bathrooms have come out of nowhere, and are being jammed down our throat. I guarantee you, I guarantee you the next stop on this train is pedophilia. I guarantee it. They will normalize pedophilia.

Beck is known for making wild and inaccurate claims. Earlier this year Beck claimed God Killed Scalia for Ted Cruz, arguing that God had to kill Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia to promote the presidential candidacy of Ted Cruz.

Yet despite God’s efforts, and Scalia’s sacrifice, Cruz lost. Go figure.

Beck is not the only religious extremist to panic at the thought of transgender-friendly bathrooms. Currently there is a transgender bathroom hysteria sweeping the nation. Yet the truth is, church is more dangerous for children than a transgender-friendly bathroom.

A child is more likely to be molested at church than in a transgender-friendly bathroom.

As the transgender bathroom hysteria rages across the nation, it is important to remember where the real danger is for children. And despite the hysteria, a church is much more dangerous for a child than a public bathroom.

Earlier this week a gay Alabama lawmaker discusses the fact that church is a greater threat to children than transgender-friendly bathrooms. In a touching op-ed post, state representative Patricia Todd discussed the difficulties of being transgender, and the myths surrounding the transgender community.

As for “the bathroom issue” Todd notes:

No evidence has been uncovered showing that fears of transgender persons and “the bathroom issue” are warranted. Several states, school districts and corporations have adopted their own policies affirming transgender people’s right to use the bathroom that aligns with their gender identity and have not reported problems.

As for the plight of transgender people, Todd reports:

In a study from UCLA’s Williams Institute, nearly 70% of transgender people said they had experienced verbal harassment in a situation involving gender-segregated bathrooms, while nearly 10% reported physical assault.

As for the safety of children, Todd observes:

Most child predators are male (The National Center for Victims of Crime) and The Child Molestation Research & Prevention Institute notes that 90% of child molesters target children in their network of family and friends, and the majority are men married to women.

In other words, the real danger to children is not strangers in a public bathroom, but people they know, and are taught to trust.

Indeed, anyone who pays attention to the news recognizes that youth pastors are often associated with the sexual abuse of children, and of course there is always the despicable, ongoing, and never-ending sexual abuse of children in the Catholic church.

American News X reports in 2014 the US Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) came out with a report on sexual abuse in the Catholic church. The report indicates that from 1950-2013, 17,259 victims made accusations and 6,427 clerics had been counted as “not implausibly” or “credibly” accused. In addition, it should be noted that these numbers do not account for underreporting, or include the unusually large number victims who came forward in 2003 in the wake of the Boston Globe‘s eye-opening report on sexual abuse in the Catholic church by their Spotlight team.

American News X also reports evangelical leaders have grown concerned enough about sexual abuse in their ranks that they have launched the “Godly Response to Abuse in the Christian Environment” (GRACE) to train, educate and help faith communities prevent the rampant child sexual abuse in America’s churches.

A presentation titled “Offenders Within The Church: Who Are They And How Do They Operate?” gives an ominous indication of the grave threat facing children in American churches, including the fact that reported child abuse accusations against US protestant churches average 70 per week (GRACE also acknowledges that the actual number is probably much higher due to under-reporting.)

In fact, GRACE even has a name for this phenomenon that contributes to sexual abuse in churches: The Five Exploitations:

  1. Exploitation of “religious cover”: Child molesters’ apparent embrace of religious practices and doctrine gives them access to children while providing cover for their behavior.
  2. Exploitation of faith: “The victim’s own analysis of religious doctrine may result in confusion and silence.”
  3. Exploitation of power: Children are taught to submit to authority “from the earliest age.”
  4. Exploitation of needs: Churches are always in need of volunteers and don’t always have the resources to thoroughly vet everyone. On top of that, churchgoers often come in need of support and spiritual solace.
  5. Exploitation of trust: Churches foster a trusting environment, especially for families with children, and children are taught to trust in God and those whom they see as His representatives.

As for the big myth that transgender people using public bathrooms pose some sort of threat, a report issued by Media Matters cites experts from twelve states – including law enforcement officials, state human rights workers, and sexual assault victims advocates – who debunk the myth that transgender non-discrimination laws have any relation to incidents of sexual assault or harassment in public restrooms.

Bottom line: Children are much more likely to be molested at church than in a transgender-friendly bathroom.

Transgender bathroom hysteria: An unhinged mother waving a Bible verbally assaults Target customers.

With bible in hand and family in tow a mother of 12 can be seen screaming at Target customers about the evils of transgender people and the inclusive bathroom policy of Target department stores.

A video of the unnamed woman’s loud protest was recently posted to YouTube. In the video the woman can be seen marching down the aisles of the store screaming, accusing America of “bowing to the homosexual perverted agenda” and urging Target customers “to run and flee this place.”

The following is a sample of the unhinged woman’s rant:

Attention Target customers. Do not be deceived, Target would have you believe with their Mother’s Day displays that they love mothers and children. This is a deception. This is not love, and they’ve proven it by opening their bathrooms to perverted men. I’m a mother of 12 and I’m very disgusted by this wicked practice.

Mothers get your children out of this store. Mothers have enough decency to get out of this store, it’s a dangerous place… What Target has done is very hateful. It’s hateful towards families. It’s hateful towards mothers. It’s hateful towards children… Are you gonna let the devil rape your children?

Fueled by irrational fear and bigotry, many Christians have promised to boycott Target because of its transgender-inclusive bathroom policy. Yet despite the pressure from unhinged conservative Christians, Target CEO Brian Cornell insists the company will not reverse its position.

The Bible-waving mom at Target is part of a shameful and vile attack on transgender people sponsored by conservative Christians, an attack that promotes the discredited and malicious myth that transgender people using public bathrooms pose some sort of threat.

Last week the Obama administration issued a sweeping directive telling every public school district in the country to allow transgender students to use the bathrooms that match their gender identity.

However, in reaction to this fair and just policy move, many conservative Christians reacted with horror.

Bottom line: the facts show that transgender people using public bathrooms do not pose a threat to others. However, this truth will not stop the panic of irrational Christians lost in the grip of transgender bathroom hysteria.

Transgender bathroom hysteria explodes: Conservative Christians freak out.

In a victory for human rights, the Obama administration issued a sweeping directive on Friday telling every public school district in the country to allow transgender students to use the bathrooms that match their gender identity.

However, in reaction to the fair and just policy move, conservative Christians in the South reacted with horror.

Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick, speaking to reporters Friday, said his state “will not yield to blackmail from the president of the United States,” declaring:

This goes against the values of so many people. This has everything to do with keeping the federal government out of local issues.

Patrick went on to compare transgender students having the right use a bathroom to removing forced prayer from public school:

I believe it is the biggest issue facing families and schools in America since prayer was taken out of public schools…

Tennessee state Rep. Susan Lynn, a vile Christian extremist, issued an angry statement on her Facebook page Friday morning that said in part:

Transgenderism (sic) is a mental disorder called gender identity disorder — no one should be forced to entertain another’s mental disorder and it is not healthy for the individual with the disorder.

Family Research Council President Tony Perkins said President Obama should be impeached for accommodating transgender students:

If the president chooses to go forward with this outrageous order – then congress should begin impeachment proceedings.

Perkins said the decree should be “resisted with every legal and moral instrument we have available to us in this country,” saying:

Every parent, every school board in America should absolutely refuse to sacrifice the safety of their children for the threat of taking away nine federal pennies that make up every educational dollar.

Commenting on the story, an outraged Southern Baptist Convention President Ronnie Floyd opined:

It’s an outrageous attack on our Creator Himself, upon human sexuality and morality and a further advancement of the flagrant attack on religious freedom in our culture.

While Fox News pundit Todd Starnes squeals:

We must defy Obama’s transgender decree — no matter the cost.

The above remarks are but the tip of the iceberg of a long and sustained howl from conservative Christians angry that their privilege has been challenged, and their prejudice and bigotry is being overturned.

Bottom line: Expect more whining, and more claims of Christian persecution, as the long arc of the moral universe slowly bends towards justice.

President Obama takes a stand for transgender students.

In a victory for human rights, the Obama administration issued a sweeping directive on Friday telling every public school district in the country to allow transgender students to use the bathrooms that match their gender identity.

In a letter sent to every public school district in America the administration warns school districts that they should allow transgender students to use bathrooms consistent with their chosen gender identity, or risk losing federal funding.

A copy of the letter provided to the New York Times reads in part:

A school may not require transgender students to use facilities inconsistent with their gender identity or to use individual-user facilities when other students are not required to do so.

(A school’s obligation under federal law) to ensure nondiscrimination on the basis of sex requires schools to provide transgender students equal access to educational programs and activities even in circumstances in which other students, parents, or community members raise objections or concerns. As is consistently recognized in civil rights cases, the desire to accommodate others’ discomfort cannot justify a policy that singles out and disadvantages a particular class of students.

In a statement accompanying the directive, Attorney General Loretta Lynch said:

There is no room in our schools for discrimination of any kind, including discrimination against transgender students on the basis of their sex.

The directive is in response to Republican lawmakers, encouraged by conservative Christians, who continue to try and harass and intimidate the transgender community with mean-spirited and hopelessly misguided bathroom laws.

Currently a new North Carolina law that unfairly bans transgender people from accessing public facilities like bathrooms and locker rooms that correspond with their gender identity is receiving a great deal of negative attention as celebrities as diverse as Charles Barkley and Bruce Springsteen have come out to denounce the draconian new law.

Fueled by irrational fear, the transgender bathroom hysteria currently sweeping the Bible belt is but a thinly veiled expression of Christian bigotry and hatred towards the transgender community.

The Obama administration deserves a great deal of credit for standing up to the Christian bullies, and protecting transgender students. The gnashing of teeth and cries of persecution have already begun.

Bottom line: Obama is right. Transgender students should be allowed to use bathrooms that match their gender identity.
