A fish rots from the head down: Top Vatican official Cardinal George Pell has been convicted of sexually abusing minors by a criminal court in Australia.

According to multiple reports, Cardinal Pell, who is the Vatican’s third most powerful official and a close advisor to Pope Francis, was convicted in Australia on charges that he sexually abused two choir boys in the late 1990s.

The Daily Beast reports:

The Vatican’s third most powerful official has been convicted in Australia on all charges he sexually abused two choir boys there in the late ’90s…

A unanimous jury returned its verdict for Cardinal George Pell on Tuesday (Australian time) after more than three days of deliberations…

The Inquisitor reports:

Cardinal George Pell, the Vatican’s third most powerful official, was found guilty on Tuesday of sexually abusing two choir boys in the late 1990s, a decision that makes him the highest-ranking Catholic Church official to face criminal convictions.

Pell is Australia’s highest ranking Catholic, the Vatican’s Prefect of the Secretariat for the Economy, and a close adviser and friend to Pope Francis. He is the highest ranking Vatican official to ever go on trial for sex abuse, and he is now the highest ranking Vatican official to be convicted of crimes concerning sexual abuse.

Pell took leave of his position at the Vatican last year to stand trial in Melbourne, where he was accused of sexually abusing two choir boys when he was the archbishop.

According to reports the victims were alter boys in the choir at St. Patrick’s Cathedral and were sexually abused by Pell inside the church.

The Catholic News Agency reports Pell will be sentenced in early 2019 and will not be incarcerated prior to his sentencing.

In addition to being found guilty of molesting the choir boys at St. Patrick’s Cathedral, Pell is also accused of sexually assaulting two boys in a swimming pool in Ballarat, Victoria. A criminal trial concerning that case is expected to begin early next year.

Pell has denied all accusations of inappropriate conduct and claims he is innocent. He is expected to appeal his conviction.

In the past Pell has shown little sympathy for the survivors of sexual abuse at the hands of Catholic clergy, and is on record claiming:

The Catholic Church is no more legally responsible for priests who abuse children than a trucking company which employs a driver who molests women.

Bottom line: Cardinal George Pell, the Vatican’s third most powerful official and a close adviser to Pope Francis, has been convicted of sexually abusing two choir boys at St. Patrick’s Cathedral in Melbourne, Australia.

Blaming the victim: Bishop Donald Sanborn claims that the immodest dress of modern women causes sexual assault.

In a recent blog post for In Veritate, Bishop Sanborn offers a critique of the “MeToo” movement by suggesting that women cause their own sexual assault by tempting men with their “immodest dress.”

In his blog post Sanborn makes it clear that victims are at least partially responsible for their own sexual assault, writing:

It is true that the conduct of some men is deplorable in this regard, but it is also true that the conduct of some women is deplorable as well.

In his post Sanborn spends a great deal of effort explaining how women’s fashions have changed over the years, noting:

The trend began over one hundred years ago, and gained momentum in World War I. Before the war, for example, women covered their entire bodies with clothing. After the war, the hemlines came up and the necklines came down.

Sanborn goes on to offer a summary of how women’s fashions changed in the 20th century while making his case that immodest dress causes sexual assault. Sullivan suggests that the real problem started in the 1960s:

The 1960s produced a sexual revolution unheard of in the history of the world, which in turn caused a revolution in family life from which we are still reeling…

Sanborn later notes:

Up to about 1965, most women were married, not divorced, had five or six children, at times more, and were devoted to their homes. With the appearance of the birth control pill in the 1960s, the role and attitudes of women would change radically, and with these changes, family life would suffer immeasurably.

In other words, for Sanborn, “immodest dress” coupled with the women’s liberation movement of the 1960s, causes sexual assault, because now men and women sometimes work together:

The effect of all of this revolution in sexual mores, as well as the role of women, is that men and women have been thrown together into situations which are very dangerous. Women are daily interacting with men in the workplace. In many cases they are dressed in such a way as to be immodestly attractive to men. The inevitable result is that, unless the men in the office are very vigilant about the virtue of chastity and fidelity to their wives, some very bad things take place.

Thus, according to Sanborn’s reasoning, if only the women would simply stay home and make babies rape would not be a problem.

The stupid, it burns.

Sanborn goes on to blame “show business” for sexual assault while suggesting that women who are sexually assaulted “probably did much to cause the assault”:

Most of these assaults upon women are seen in show business, an environment which is notably loose and never known for its observance of chastity and fidelity. Most of the “victim” ladies in these cases look like lascivious women, and probably did much to cause the assault.

That’s right, Sanborn is claiming that a woman who is sexually assaulted “probably did much to cause the assault” because she looks like a “lascivious” woman.

In short, Sanborn acts as if rape and sexual assault are a new thing brought about by changing women’s fashions in the 20th century. However, Sanborn is wrong. Sexual assault was a problem long before the 20th century, and a woman’s attire has no bearing on whether or not she is raped or sexually assaulted.

Bishop Sanborn is an ultra-conservative Catholic bishop, not in communion with the modern Roman Catholic Church. He serves as Rector of Most Holy Trinity Seminary in Brooksville, Florida.

Bottom line: Bishop Donald Sanborn argues women cause their own sexual assault by dressing immodestly and working outside the home.

What about the children? Pennsylvania Supreme court rules that the names of 11 priests accused of sexual abuse in an explosive grand jury report will remain secret.

CNN reports:

The Pennsylvania Supreme court has ordered that the names of 11 priests accused of sexual abuse in a grand jury report remain permanently redacted.

Pennsylvania Attorney General Josh Shapiro had requested that the priests’ names be made public. The clergymen are among more than 300 “predator priests” accused of sexually abusing more than 1,000 child victims. The names of more than 270 priests were made public when the report was released in August.

CNN continues:

In its opinion released Monday, the Pennsylvania Supreme Court said that the priests’ names should remain redacted “to protect their constitutional rights to reputation.”

Vice News reports:

The names of 11 priests cited in the bombshell Pennsylvania grand jury report on child sex abuse will be kept secret to protect their reputations, the state’s Supreme Court ruled Monday.

To protect their reputations? What about the children? What about the public’s right to know?

As one might imagine, survivors of sexual abuse at the hands of the predator priests, as well as many others, are outraged by the court ruling.

And while the Catholic Church has always had the ability as well as the moral responsibility to name and punish the 11 priests in question, they will do nothing. For one fact is certain: the Catholic Church will always protect and enable pedophile priests. Indeed, the Catholic Church has demonstrated time and time again that when it comes to the rape and sexual assault of children, the Catholic Church stands with the rapists.

In their opinion the Pennsylvania Supreme court said:

We acknowledge that this outcome may be unsatisfying to the public and to the victims of the abuse detailed in the report. While we understand and empathize with these perspectives, constitutional rights are of the highest order, and even alleged sexual abusers, or those abetting them, are guaranteed by our Commonwealth’s Constitution the right of due process.

Earlier this year a long awaited grand jury report found that over 300 predator priests sexually abused over a 1,000 children in Pennsylvania.

The explosive grand jury report released by the Pennsylvania Supreme Court documents rampant and pervasive child sex abuse in the Catholic Church, listing more than 300 accused clergy and over a 1,000 confirmed child victims.

The report demonstrated that hundreds of “predator priests” sexually abused more than 1,000 children in Pennsylvania for decades — all the while being protected and enabled by Roman Catholic Church leaders.

In one particularly heinous episode documented in the report, a group of Catholic priests in Pittsburgh ran an extensive child porn ring where children were sexually exploited and groomed for abuse. Working together, the priests would select, target, and groom young teen boys to exploit.

Bottom line: The Pennsylvania Supreme court rules that the names of 11 priests accused of sexual abuse in an explosive grand jury report will remain secret.

Illinois Supreme Court Justice Anne Burke is calling on every state to conduct a grand jury investigation into predator priests in the Catholic Church.

After a damning grand jury report released by the Pennsylvania Supreme Court earlier this month found that over 300 predator priests sexually abused over a 1,000 children in Pennsylvania, Illinois Supreme Court Justice Anne Burke is calling on every state to conduct a similar grand jury investigation into predator priests being protected by the Catholic Church.

Justice Burke, a devout Catholic who was once interim chair of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops study on nationwide clerical sexual abuse in 2002, is arguing that the government, and not the church, should be investigating predator priests and the church leaders protecting and enabling the predators.

Commenting on the Pennsylvania grand jury report, Burke told the Chicago Sun Times:

I wasn’t shocked. Not at all.

Noting the intolerable abuses within the church Burke opined:

I think every state should convene a grand jury into this culture of secrecy that protected offenders at all costs.

Commenting on her experience working on the 2002 U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops study on nationwide clerical sexual abuse, Burke said:

It was happening in Chicago, but we had to rely on files the bishops were willing to give us – and we knew there had to be more, but we had no subpoena powers.

We had no government authority!

We did a lot of research, but a lot was kept from us and we knew it. And shockingly, the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops charter our National Review Board was appointed under did NOT include investigating the BISHOPS! Or even penalizing the bishops or Cardinals for transferring these priests.

Burke added:

But we did report bishops were transferring priests from parish to parish and diocese to diocese knowing they had a history of abuse.

Reaffirming her commitment to secular, criminal investigations into church misconduct, Burke told NPR:

Only the civil authorities – who are solely disinterested, not convened by the church itself – can get to the bottom of how prevalent is this problem.

Justice Burke is right. Every state Supreme Court should convene a grand jury to investigate the Catholic Church. The numbers in the Pennsylvania report are horrific, but not surprising. It is a well established fact that the Catholic Church has been and continues to be riddled with predator priests that rape and sexually abuse children, using their supposed spiritual authority as church leaders to intimidate and bully their victims into silence.

Pennsylvania is not unique. Wherever there is a Catholic Church, there will be predator priests raping and abusing children, and church leaders willing to cover up those crimes in a vain attempt to preserve the reputation of a morally corrupt church.

Bottom line: Illinois Supreme Court Justice Anne Burke is calling on every state to conduct a grand jury investigation into predator priests and the Catholic Church. It’s a good idea. Secular authorities should begin investigating the crimes of the Catholic Church immediately.Illinois Supreme Court Justice Anne Burke Calls For National Investigation Into Predator Priests (Image via Screen Grab)

Dishonest U.S. Bishops refuse to take responsibility for their crimes, and blame the gays for priests raping children.

The same church leaders who protected and enabled predator priests for decades are now blaming the gays for the epidemic of Catholic priests raping and sexually abusing children.

In a letter to Catholics in the Diocese of Madison, Wisconsin, released immediately after a bombshell report implicated more than 300 Pennsylvania priests in the rape and sexual assault of over 1,000 children, Bishop Robert Morlino, the Bishop of Madison, Wisconsin, wrote:

It is time to admit that there is a homosexual subculture within the hierarchy of the Catholic Church that is wreaking great devastation in the vineyard of the Lord…

In his letter Bishop Morlino blames the gays, citing “deviant sexual — almost exclusively homosexual — acts by clerics,” as the source of the devastating and insurmountable moral crisis faced by the Catholic Church. In so doing Bishop Morlino conveniently ignores the fact that the real problem facing the church is Catholic priests raping and sexually assaulting children. And, of course, church leaders like himself in the Catholic hierarchy who have been protecting and enabling predator priests for decades.

Reporting on the attempt by Catholic Bishops to blame some mysterious “homosexual subculture” for the rape and sexual assault of children by Catholic priests, Andrew Seidel notes:

This is a disgusting attempt to paint LGBTQ Americans, who have made great strides toward acceptance and equality despite the best efforts of the Catholic Church, as “disordered,” “deviant,” and “ in violation of the natural moral law.” As the tidal wave of this scandal again crashes down on his church, Morlino is trying to shift the blame.

Seidel is correct. Morlino is trying to shift the blame away from Catholic clergy and onto some mysterious “homosexual subculture,” using gays as a scapegoat in an intellectually dishonest and morally bankrupt charade.

Seidel continues, noting that Morlino is wrong, and that there is no evidence whatsoever that links homosexuality to pedophilia:

Morlino is wrong. There is not now, nor has there ever been, a link between homosexuality and pedophilia. This myth, bred of ignorance, has been debunked countless times. For those of us who dwell in the world of facts and reality, the research is clear: Most sexual abuse is committed by heterosexual males.

Bottom line: Cowardly and despicable U.S. Bishops like Robert Morlino refuse to take responsibility for the absolute and abject moral failure of the Catholic Church, and instead they blame the gays.

“Priests were raping little boys and little girls” – A long awaited report finds over 300 predator priests sexually abused over a 1,000 children in Pennsylvania.

The numbers are horrific, but not surprising. It is a well established fact that the Catholic Church has been and continues to be riddled with predatory clergy that rape and sexually abuse children, using their supposed spiritual authority as church leaders to intimidate and bully their victims into silence.

The Grand Jury Report notes:

Priests were raping little boys and girls, and the men of God who were responsible for them not only did nothing; they hid it all.

The Washington Post reports:

The Pennsylvania Supreme Court on Tuesday released a sweeping grand jury report on sex abuse in the Catholic Church, listing more than 300 accused clergy and detailing a “systematic” coverup effort by church leaders over 70 years.

The New York Post reports:

There were hundreds of “predator priests” sexually abusing more than 1,000 children in Pennsylvania for decades — all while being shielded by Roman Catholic Church leaders, according to a scathing grand jury report released Tuesday.

CBS News reports:

More than 1,000 children — and possibly many more — were molested by hundreds of Roman Catholic priests in six Pennsylvania dioceses, while senior church officials took steps to cover it up, according to a landmark grand jury report released Tuesday.

The grand jury said it believes the “real number” of abused children might be “in the thousands” since some records were lost and victims were afraid to come forward. The report said more than 300 clergy committed the abuse over a period of decades.

The story is all too familiar: Catholic priests rape and sexually abuse children, and Catholic Church leaders cover up the abuse. This is standard operating procedure for the church, and has been for decades. In fact, the Catholic Church fought for months to stop the public release of this most recent grand jury report, repeating the pattern of covering up and ultimately enabling pedophile priests, and the rape and sexual abuse of children.

Friendly Atheist notes a couple of heartbreaking passages from the introduction to the Grand Jury Report:

Most of the victims were boys; but there were girls too. Some were teens; many were pre-pubescent. Some were manipulated with alcohol or pornography. Some were made to masturbate their assailants, or were groped by them. Some were raped orally, some vaginally, some anally. But all of them were brushed aside, in every part of the state, by church leaders who preferred to protect the abusers and their institution above all.

Priests were raping little boys and girls, and the men of God who were responsible for them not only did nothing; they hid it all. For decades. Monsignors, auxiliary bishops, bishops, archbishops, cardinals have mostly been protected; many, including some named in this report, have been promoted. Until that changes, we think it is too early to close the book on the Catholic Church sex scandal.

Bottom line: The Catholic Church is rotten to the core, and a long awaited grand jury report finds over 300 predator priests sexually abused over a 1,000 children in Pennsylvania.

Despicable child abuse: In a horrifying video out of France an angry old priest is seen slapping a crying infant during baptism.

In a YouTube video released yesterday and titled “Un prête gifle un nourrisson lorde son baptême” (“A priest slaps an infant during his baptism”) an angry old French priest can be seen slapping a crying infant during their baptism.

The following is a translation of the exchange seen on the video via Reddit user CeaRhan:

Priest: It’s a tantrum, this is called a tantrum.

I will spill water on (just?) the forehead, hmm? And then, I’ll kiss the lil’ kid. Because he’ll have become a little christian. Ohlalalala. (expressing discontentement and kindness, basically a soft “come on!” directed at the kid)

0:17 I will scream louder than you. So, calm down. Calm down.

>he hits the kid

> indigned people start raising their voices, but they’re very gentle in the way they’re saying it, probably under the shock and by respect. “No no”, “he’s afraid” and “don’t hit the kid” are said.

Priest: Calm down! You need to calm down! (the father can be heard snapping out of the shock)

Woman: Sir, we don’t hit him.

Woman (in the audience): Isn’t this forbidden?!

0:31 Priest: Now you calm down. There. You will calm down. You will calm down. You will calm down. There.

>Meanwhile the father is taking his kid back.

A woman, to the priest: Let go.

No, no, let g-

And it cuts, the father probably about to start an argument with the priest.

While it is true that the Catholic church is infamous for abusing children, with a long and well documented history of Catholic priests and nuns abusing children in countless ways, including rape and sexual abuse, abusive corporal punishment in Catholic schools and orphanages, and the emotional and psychological abuse entailed in teaching innocent children that they are broken, sinful, and in need of redemption; the fact remains that the blatant and despicable abuse of an infant captured on this video is nevertheless quite horrific.

Bottom line: In a disturbing video out of France an angry old priest is seen slapping a crying infant during baptism. But the Catholic church will call it “Christian love.”

Spitting on the victims: Vatican announces Cardinal Bernard Law, protector of pedophile priests, will be honored with a full Cardinal’s funeral in Rome.

Law, the disgraced former Archbishop of Boston, died on Wednesday in Rome. He was 86 years old.

Law was appointed Archbishop of Boston in 1984, and was forced to resign in disgrace from the position in 2002, after reports revealed that he had been protecting pedophile priests, moving them from parish to parish, and in so doing allowing many innocent children to be raped and sexually assaulted.

Spotlight,” a powerful film exploring the widespread sexual abuse of children by Catholic priests, was an account of The Boston Globe’s award winning reporting on how Cardinal Law systematically protected pedophile priests from prosecution, and the tragic consequences for the young victims of Law’s criminal behavior.

However after fleeing Boston in disgrace, Law was not disciplined by the Vatican for protecting and enabling the rape and sexual abuse of children by pedophile priests. Instead, Law was rewarded with a promotion. In 2004 Pope John Paul II made Law the Archpriest of the Basilica of Saint Mary Major, a largely ceremonial position from which he retired in 2011, at the age of 80.

CNN reports that Law will now be honored and celebrated in Rome with a full Cardinal’s funeral:

Cardinal Bernard Law, who has died 15 years after he resigned as Boston’s archbishop amid allegations that he covered up for pedophile priests, will receive a full cardinal’s funeral Thursday at St. Peter’s Basilica in Vatican City.

The funeral plans appear to follow the Catholic Church’s protocol for cardinals who die in Rome, even as a network of survivors of sex abuse by priests has publicly called on the Vatican to keep survivors in mind when planning the event.

Cardinal Angelo Sodano, the dean of the College of Cardinals, will celebrate the funeral Mass, scheduled for 3:30 p.m., the Vatican said. Pope Francis then will give a “final commendation,” or blessing, as he has previously for cardinals’ funerals.

That’s right, Pope Francis will honor this moral monster with a “blessing.”

Before the funeral plans were announced, the Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests (SNAP) released a statement urging against a “celebratory focus” on Law:

Survivors of child sexual assault in Boston, who were first betrayed by Law’s cover-up of sex crimes and then doubly betrayed by his subsequent promotion to Rome, were those most hurt. No words can convey the pain these survivors and their loved ones suffered.

Our only hope is that the Vatican keeps these survivors in mind when it comes time for the cardinal’s funeral. We highly doubt there is a single victim of abuse who will ever receive the same attention, pomp and circumstance by Pope Francis. Every single Catholic should ask Pope Francis and the Vatican why. Why Law’s life was so celebrated when Boston’s clergy sex abuse survivors suffered so greatly? Why was Law promoted when Boston’s Catholic children were sexually abused, ignored, and pushed aside time and time again?

This celebratory focus on abuse enablers like Law must end. It is time for the Vatican to refocus on change: protecting children and those who have been hurt.

Clearly the Vatican and Pope Francis do not care about the survivors of  child sexual assault, but they will gladly celebrate and honor a man who facilitated and allowed the sexual abuse of countless children.

Bottom line: The Vatican and Pope Francis will spit on the victims of Cardinal Law’s criminal behavior, and honor a horrendous enabler of child abuse.

Pot meet kettle: Pope Francis warns that spreading fake news is a “serious sin” while claiming a magic man lives in the sky.

A well meaning but morally bankrupt Pope Francis spoke out against the dangers of spreading fake news this weekend, apparently oblivious to the fact that the Catholic Church is built upon a foundation of fake news.

Indeed, claims of a virgin birth and resurrection are rooted in nothing but religious superstition and constitute long standing examples of fake news.

However, either oblivious to or simply not caring about his hypocrisy, Francis, speaking with representatives from Catholic media outlets at a meeting in the Vatican on Saturday, said:

We must not fall prey to the ‘sins of communication:’ disinformation – that is, giving just one side of the argument – slander, which is sensationalistic, or defamation, looking for outdated and old things, and bringing them to light today; they are very grave sins, which damage the heart of the journalist and harm people.

Francis continued:

There is an urgent need for news communicated with serenity, precision, and completeness, with a calm language, so as to favor a fruitful reflection; carefully weighted and clear words, which reject the inflation of allusive, strident and ambiguous speech. It is important that, methodically and with patience, criteria of judgment and information be offered so that the public is able to understand and discern, and is not stunned and disoriented.

Francis is correct to note the problem with fake news, yet he is two-faced and intellectually dishonest when he condemns some fake news while continuing to promote the dangerous fake news that he constantly feeds the gullible and ignorant as head of the Catholic Church.

Indeed, religious superstition is the original fake news.

Yet despite his at times seductive rhetoric that calls to weak minded progressives desperate to find something good in the moral cesspool that is the Catholic church, Pope Francis continues to be a major disappointment, and a huge moral failure.

Previously, in what can only be described as a stunning bit of ironic hypocrisy, Francis, the head of a notoriously sexist institution that routinely discriminates against women, issued a call for equal treatment of women in the workplace.

More serious, in a scathing report, the UN condemned Francis and the Catholic Church for protecting and enabling pedophile priests engaged in the sexual abuse of children. And there is strong evidence Francis continues the Catholic Church’s reprehensible policy of protecting pedophile priests from criminal prosecution.

Yet another report reveals that Francis has been refusing to punish pedophile priests, and instead of cracking down on the sexual abuse of children by clergy in the church, Pope Francis is in reality quietly making the Catholic church a safe space for predators.

Indeed, the recent moral failures of Pope Francis range from the sinister to the comical. Previously a clueless Francis told an audience at St. Peter’s Square that choosing not to have children is “selfish,” apparently forgetting that he is a celibate man without children.

Also, Francis recently endorsed corporal punishment, a form of child abuse, by making the perverse claim that parents hitting children is “beautiful” as long as the act of violence against a child is done with “dignity.”

In addition, Pope Francis also believes that transgender teens should stop complaining, deny their lived experience, and “accept their own body as it was created.”

Perhaps most disturbing, commenting on the Charlie Hebdo massacre, Francis declared “one cannot make fun of faith” and that anyone who throws insults can expect a “punch,” offering a tacit justification for terror and violence in response to a cartoon making fun of religious superstition.

In short, despite the sometimes friendly facade, the occasional superficial liberal rhetoric, and a humorous joke now and then, Pope Francis is a moral failure guilty of perpetuating the institutional immorality of the Catholic Church.

Bottom line: Pope Francis lacks the moral and intellectual authority to be taken seriously about anything. As for fake news, nobody has done a better job of spreading fake news then the Catholic Church.

Pope Francis protects pedophile priest from prosecution: Vatican uses diplomatic immunity to shield priest from child porn charges.

According to multiple reports, a high-ranking priest working in the Vatican’s embassy in Washington was caught with child pornography, including images of pre-pubescent children. However, after U.S. prosecutors indicated they were ready to charge the pedophile priest for possessing child pornography, the Vatican stepped in, claimed diplomatic immunity, and shipped the pedophile priest to Vatican city, where he is now safe from prosecution for his heinous crimes.

ABC reports:

A high-ranking priest working in the Vatican’s embassy in Washington has been recalled after U.S. prosecutors asked for him to be charged there and face trial in a child pornography investigation, Vatican and U.S. officials said Friday.

The diplomat was suspected of possessing, but not producing or disseminating, child pornography including images of pre-pubescent children, a U.S. source familiar with the case said.

Let’s face it: Pope Francis is a marvelous showman – a genius at public relations and media manipulation who has successfully hustled the media, and the public at large. He says nice things like all animals go to heaven; he chastises creationists and other science deniers by noting that God is not a magician; and in a good natured gesture he asks atheists for good vibrations.

Yet despite the friendly facade, the occasional superficial liberal rhetoric, and a humorous joke now and then, Pope Francis is guilty of perpetuating the institutional immorality of the Catholic Church.

In short, despite pledges from Pope Francis to clean up the church, the horror continues, and the Catholic Church continues to protect and enable clergy members who rape and sexually abuse children.

It is no secret that Catholic priests have been sexually abusing children for decades, if not centuries. This most recent report only serves to confirm what many already suspected: nothing has changed – the Catholic Church continues to protect and enable pedophile priests.

And, as always, it is the children who suffer.
