Our Corner | State of Belief Radio

Last Saturday, Dr. Robert P. Jones was featured on State of Belief radio, talking to host Welton Gaddy about the Fortnight for Freedom (which ends on July 4) and religious liberty. If you haven’t already seen it, check out Public Religion Research Institute’s “Fortnight of Facts,” which offers some data as a supplement to the bishops’ campaign.

Dr. Jones expanded upon these facts for Gaddy, explaining that nearly six in ten Americans do not believe religious liberty is under threat. He also discussed the more particular case of American Catholics, noting that on this issue there seems to be a “curious coalition” that has formed between the Catholic hierarchy and white evangelical Protestants. Catholics do not believe that religious liberty is under threat; evangelicals are the only group where a majority perceives this attack. Dr. Jones calls the recent struggle over religious liberty galvanized by the HHS Mandate “new packaging on older themes,” noting that this issue is not likely to drive politics leading up to the election.
