Jerry Coyne on the Gaskell Affair

Jerry Coyne has a blog entry on the case of Martin Gaskell, an astronomer who did not get a job he applied for at the University of Kentucky, and is accusing the university of discrimination against his religious views. I want to share this because issues like this tend to get polarized, and so I really appreciate Coyne’s attempt to appreciate the relevance of nuance and the details of Gaskell’s views. Coyne is an atheist with low tolerance for those who claim that religion and science are compatible or even complimentary ways of knowing, and so his effort to be fair, even when it means disagreeing with other science bloggers, is particularly praiseworthy.

I don’t know all the details of the case, and to the limited extent I’ve commented before on this case, I may have done so with insufficient or inaccurate information. And so another reason I share this link is to give voice to another perspective that may compliment and complete other posts I’ve linked to about this.
