Rock Mass

Rock Mass February 14, 2013

I found myself wondering recently whether the necessary components for a mass in rock style are available. Below are songs which have the right titles and are not a world away in their themes. But are there other songs, and ones perhaps more suited for this purpose, than the ones below? I wonder what it would be like to try incorporating these into a worship service. And would there be any interest in someone writing an actual rock mass? Or has it been done, and I just don't know about it?

Kyrie (Mr. Mister)

Gloria (U2)

Credo (Fish)

Agnus Dei (Michael W. Smith)

There aren't a lot of songs actually called “Credo.” But there is an abundance that are called “I believe,” and some of those might be considered for inclusion: songs by Blessid Union of Souls and Tears for Fears, for instance, and for some the one from The Book of Mormon musical might also be an option. There's also a Credo by Kjartan Sveinsson, formerly of Sigur Rós, but it isn't really in a rock style. And for Japanese speakers, there is one by Ayaka. But none strikes me as clearly preferable to “Credo” by Fish.

If you are looking to try to get all the proper components, that is more challenging. This seems to be the only rock song called Sanctus that is not totally inappropriate…
