I am astonished by how often students claim that “everyone is different” and think that they have said something relevant to discussion of topics such as morality or religion. Human beings are not entirely different from one another, and it is not clear that things which no two humans have in common pertain to either of these areas, or any of the others in which students tend to assert that people are all different. Morality, religion, music, food, and many other things are shared in common among significant numbers of human beings.
When did it catch on to assert that “everyone is different” in these contexts? And why haven’t more people taken the few moments necessary to think about this in order to realize that, in these specific areas, it simply isn’t true?
The fact that no two snowflakes are identical doesn’t mean that they do not share a common molecular composition, nor that they do not share comparable processes of formation.
Ironically, a great many students seem to have in common that they assert “everyone is different” without really thinking about it.
