LOST Rewatch: The 23rd Psalm

LOST Rewatch: The 23rd Psalm December 29, 2014

In a flashback, we see a boy taken by militants and told to shoot an old man. His older brother runs and does it so that his younger brother will not have to. We learn that that was Mr. Eko. The militants take him, taking off his cross necklace and throwing it on the ground, saying he will not need it any more.

Eko_Jesus_stickOn the island, Mr. Eko is carving “things I need to remember” onto his staff – Bible verses, including one from Revelation. He and Claire discuss the name Aaron, and the pressure of trying to live up to being like his brother. When Eko hears about the statue of the Virgin Mary, he asks to see it, and smashes it, knowing that there will be heroin inside. He then tells Charlie to take him to where he found it.

In another flashback, we see the older Eko dealing with men trying to sell heroin. They say that it is true what they say about him – that he has no soul. He kills them, but lets a boy who witnessed it live.

Later still, he goes to see his brother Yemi, who is a priest. They talk about sin and forgiveness. Eko asks whether his actions to save his brother are forgiveable since it was Yemi that was saved by them.

Eko says that it is God which has given this opportunity, since the money Eko gives for the statues can be used to buy polio vaccine. But Yemi refuses to help.

On the island, Eko finds a priest’s body – he recognizes the man from a gold tooth, and saying that he knows him, kneels and says a prayer.

Eko says that Yemi lives in a world where righteousness and evil seem very far apart, but that is not the real world. He asks Yemi whether keeping his church and having money for vaccines is worth the price of his signature on fake ordination papers. Eko says they are both sinners now, and Yemi says yes, but God will forgive him.

Charlie calls Eko’s staff his “Jesus stick” and notes that it has dried blood on it.

Eko sees the smoke monster. It comes right up to him, and within it we see flashes from Eko’s past.

Michael communicates with Walt (or someone pretending to be him) through the computer again.

In another flashback, we see Yemi try to keep Eko from going on the plane. When the military arrives, Yemi is shot and his body taken on board, while Eko is left behind.

On the island, in the plane, Eko finds Yemi’s body with the cross that once was his. He weeps. Charlie asks Eko if he is a priest or not. Eko puts the necklace on, says that he is, and recites Psalm 23. While the recitation continues, we see Sun and Jin give Ana a fish.
