The New Star Wars Trailer

The New Star Wars Trailer October 19, 2015

The new trailer for Star Wars: The Force Awakens is intriguing, although I confess that it hasn’t really made me more excited about the movie that will be in cinemas in December. It took a while until the music or the action in the trailer started to really connect with me – although when it did so, it was wonderful. Perhaps that was the point – to drop us into a world that we think ought to be familiar, and which is in some ways, and yet only later show that not everything that we expect to find there has disappeared. And there is something compelling about the scenario we are shown – that what really happened on Endor, and on the second Death Star under construction, is the stuff of rumor and legend rather than history.

The big question that everyone is asking is why Luke Skywalker isn’t in the trailer. I can think of two possible answers, and to be honest, either would be very interesting, and one would connect up with an alternative way that George Lucas contemplated having Return of the Jedi end.

One is that we don’t get to see him until the end of the movie, and he then becomes central to the next two films.

The other is that Kylo Ren is in fact Luke Skywalker, who went far enough in the direction of the dark side in his encounter with Emperor Palpatine to have decided that he is indeed meant to continue his father’s legacy – to bring balance to the Force, rather than just goodness.

What do you think of the trailer? What are your biggest hopes and fears related to Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens? And do you have your tickets yet?

I’m not sure how the tri-saber is going to serve as a hand guard, since your opponent could just cut through the metal part between the energy streams and cut your hand off.

  • Well actually, Luke Skywalker does appear in this trailer but for just slightly more than 1 second. His hand touches R2-D2 with his right prosthetic hand at the 2:35 mark.

In early 2013, months before Kasdan and Abrams united to write the script, my Star Wars parody “Perils Of The Force” mysteriously disappeared on YouTube. In it I had a young Sith take on the persona of Darth Vader, who would kill the last fully trained Jedi Knight: Luke Skywalker. To fulfill the prophesy of the Emperor. I also had, ‘The Coalition’ [First Order] coming into power. Notice in the trailer how Leia looks shattered? I suspect something dreadful has happened to her brother Luke. I’m not excited about this movie, nor have I purchased a ticket. I sense the whole story is going to be a real downer.

I’m really amped up for the new Star Wars – and the new Hunger Games.

      • After THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK came out, I decided that it was John Williams’ music that turned me on to STAR WARS. So since then, I get a copy of the music and listen to the themes, motifs and cues before I go see the movie. I let my imagination already excited by the film score, prepare me for what I may see come to life on the screen. The images have never equaled or matched the wonderful music created by the Maestro. 🙁 Hunger Games, good.

Why can’t I delete my own comment, having seen one already here saying the same thing I was going to say?

      Use the force!

    • It looks like you managed to! 🙂

I must be stronger in the force than I thought I was!
