One topic I emphasized in my freshman class this semester is that a lot of misleading headlines and confusion have resulted from misunderstanding or deliberately misconstruing how science works. Publications challenging accepted conclusions are part of the scientific process. But only when those challenges are found persuasive by a significant portion of the scientific community should one treat them as potentially correct. That’s how science, and indeed all scholarship, works: challenges are offered, new ideas floated, but they are also... Read more

There has been quite a bit of discussion of Stephen Hawking’s new book, The Grand Design, which I have not yet had the opportunity to read. But a review by James Trefil in The Washington Post suggests that the answer the book gives to why our universe exists is: the laws of physics, which produce infinite multiverses, while a post by Johannes Koelman on the blog The Hammock Physicist suggests that the answer is that the total sum energy of the universe... Read more

A lively conversation has been taking place in the comments section of a recent post about what Christian or Judeo-Christian principles may be relevant to the approaches to economics and social justice in one’s nation. It seems like an appropriate conversation to have in the period leading up to Labor Day. The U.S. Secretary of Labor has released this video (there’s a transcript of the text on the Department of Labor’s website): I had an opportunity to live in a post-communist society.... Read more

I heard Natalie Grant’s song “Human” on the radio today (not for the first time), and then two articles about her appeared on the CNN religion blogs, one focused on her recent work to combat human trafficking, the other about her latest album. Read more

“The problem with American civil religion is that it reduces faith to a particular brand of nationalism, which is precisely the opposite of the message preached by Jesus and the prophets of the Hebrew Bible. By ignoring passages about social justice and community and highlighting appeals to individual liberties, Deuteronomistic theology, the Exodus, and conquest narratives, Beck attempted to weave together a generic, nationalistic religion that he hopes will appeal to the lowest common denominator of both faith and politics... Read more

As some of you have already noticed, I have turned comment moderation back off. The Internet terrorist who has been posring spam comments seems to want to force bloggers he disagrees with to moderate comments, presumably to hinder free discussion (with which comment moderation interferes). And giving in to what bullies want just encourages them to continue their behavior. So comment moderation is off, and hopefully no one will find the occasional easily-recognizable spam message (which will always be deleted... Read more

The site Cherada has a list of videos on YouTube featuring music of Swedish composer Kurt Atterberg. One of my favorite works by this favorite composer of mine is his Symphony No.3. Here’s the first movement: There’s a lot more there by Atterberg, and as you get towards the end of the list you’ll start to find links to some other great works by other composers as well. Read more

I’ve just learned that there is a new blog in town: Sheffield Biblical Studies. Here’s a description, from the first entry, which is dated to today: This blog will be a mix of news, events, book reviews and anything relating to biblical studies in general. There will be a range of contributors, including students, associated with the Department of Biblical Studies at Sheffield. There may even be a bit of engagement with theology, and by that I might mean a little... Read more
