Eisenbrauns has announced that they will soon have available for purchase a new t-shirt for that Mesopotamian creationist in your life: one that features an excerpt from the Enuma Elish! For young-earth creationists, however, I recommend getting them something from the National Center for Science Education (which just announced that Ann Reid will be taking over as executive director after Genie Scott’s retirement). Maybe this one? Read more

I recently learned that two scholars who happen to be married both have useful websites with interesting stuff on them. Ingie Hovland is a cultural anthropologist who studies Christianity. Her website includes her blog God is in the Details, as well as book excerpts and other interesting things. Her husband Wayne Coppins is a religion professor and New Testament scholar, and his website includes book excerpts and reviews. Hopefully peer pressure from other NT scholars, as well as a positive... Read more

Dale Tuggy has been interacting with a recent post of mine here on my blog, and now in a post over on the blog Trinities. He considers the viewpoint of Paul Tillich, that God is Being itself and not one being among others, to be a form of atheism rather than of Christian theism. He rightly notes that it is not a new alternative to anthropomorphic theism. In Hume’s Dialogues concerning Natural Religion, atheism is used and rejected as an... Read more

David Hayward shared the cartoon below: I don't see the church as a place that should convert humble questioners into confident (and, if the cartoon is accurate, rather grumpy-looking) exclaimers. If anything, the church should be a place that brings in people who confidently, arrogantly, act as though they have all the answers sorted out, and teaches them to humbly acknowledge their limitations and shortcomings,... Read more

In case you ever wondered what is at the end of the rainbow, I now have photographic evidence of the answer: the Butler University campus! There is severe weather in our area, but when the sun broke through the clouds, the result was spectacular. If you are anywhere in the region currently affected by the tornado watches and warnings, I hope you stay safe! Read more

As we’ll be talking about the Lord’s Prayer in my Sunday school class this morning, I wanted to share this recording of a setting by my friend and former colleague, Scott Pfitzinger. You can find the sheet music on his web site. Read more

This came my way on Facebook. I was going to just say “discuss” but I thought I should also say something more than that. A key question for those for whom the Bible is important is how to respond to the above, if one agrees with the statement. Is the way to be true to the Bible as part of your heritage to simply repeat what it says even though that has different meaning and connotations in our present day... Read more
