Here are a few posts relevant to mythicism from around the blogosphere. From Tom Verenna, two posts on “Defining Mythicism,” one of which addresses the appeal to Galatians 1 as though Paul’s words there give a clear indication one way or the other about Jesus’ historicity, while the other post emphasizes that an all-or-nothing approach to the figure of Jesus as depicted in ancient sources is unhelpful. Also related to this subject, Neil Godfrey has a post in which he... Read more

On the occasion of Halloween, for Doctor Who fans, let me draw attention to a set of blogs dedicated to the making of Doctor Who costumes. This one focuses on the making of a suit like that worn by David Tennant (with detailed information about his ties): http://tennantsuit.blogspot.com/ In the sidebar you’ll find links to blogs about the making of costumes of other Doctors’ outfits. Apparently all one needs to do to make the 7th Doctor’s clothes is buy this... Read more

The app for iPhone and iPad that has been designed for those attending the AAR/SBL 2011 Annual Meeting has finally been released. Click here to get it on iTunes! Stephen Cook spotted its appearance even before we received notification from AAR or SBL, and I am grateful that he shared the fact that he had done so on his blog! I will be exploring what the app can do (I understand it has maps of the conference venues and the... Read more

In celebration of the return of Chuck on NBC tonight for its final season, let me share a link to Mike Friesen’s blog. Mike shared an excerpt from an interview in GQ with Zachary Levi, the actor who plays Chuck, about what it is like being a Christian in Hollywood. Levi says, among other things, “A lot of people, especially Christians, want to put you in this box of being a Christian actor, and I don’t believe in it. You do... Read more

I liked Jim West’s post today. If you are in the United States or Western Europe, you almost certainly live at a level of luxury that is unknown in much of the world. They are the 80%… This isn’t a criticism of the Occupy movement. It is a reminder that the issues of social justice that movement is highlighting are even more severe on a global scale than they are in the experience of most Americans and Europeans. Read more

What is the message of this billboard? As Hemant Mehta as well as various news outlets are pointing out, the message is that atheists, however much they may think of themselves as ultra-skeptical and critical thinkers, aren’t always. Having “skeptics” or “freethinkers” in the name of your organization or in your self-description doesn’t mean it fits all of the time, if at all. You see, the quote is not an authentic quote from Thomas Jefferson. Anyone who is familiar with... Read more

From SMBC via Jerry Coyne How the idea that “childlike faith” is unquestioning faith ever caught on is beyond me. Anyone who has had children or remembers being  a child ought to know better. The Book of Job concludes with a stamp of divine approval being given to Job’s questioning while disapproval is expressed for Job’s friends’ defense of traditional wisdom and dogma. This cartoon illustrates well what real childlike faith looks like in action. Read more
