I received an e-mail about a new journal providing an opportunity for undergraduates to publish in philosophy. It is called Stance and it is based at Ball State University. Here’s the Call for Papers: Call For Papers Stance is unique as it is produced and edited solely by undergraduates. By using external reviewers we provide feedback on every submission and often require substantive changes prior to publication. Stance mirrors the process of review and publication of professional philosophy journals. Submission Guidelines:... Read more

By popular demand (or at least direct requests from a few blog readers) I have added a search bar to the top left of the blog sidebar. It seems to do much better than Blogger’s own search bar (which isn’t saying much) and also allows you to search blogs that link from here, the blogroll, and other interesting sites. There have been several complaints about the Blogger built-in search facility in the biblioblogosphere recently. So please do try it out... Read more

Students in my class on the Bible each make a presentation on the topic for one class. Today we were up to the subject of pseudepigraphy and the epistles attributed to Paul, and the student who presented shared this video by Eman Laerton: It took a while until I realized that this is the same person who produced the “Mr. Gospel Potato Head” video some of us have shared before. Read more

Larry Hurtado has posted the final installment in our blog conversation about monotheism and Christology. Let me express once again my appreciation for his willingness to engage in this discussion, which I certainly have found beneficial, and hope others have as well. Most importantly, I feel as though this discussion has helped me identify more clearly what precisely it is that Hurtado and I reach different conclusions about, thus clarifying in my mind as well the large extent to which... Read more

That someone engaged in scientific research publishes a scientific article is par for the course, not news. That Michael Behe’s publication of an article in a respected science journal (The Quarterly Review of Biology) is an occasion for surprise and considered noteworthy is itself noteworthy. If one searches for publications by Behe in an academic database, the only results going back several years are letters to the editor and contributions to theology journals. I have no problems with anyone contributing to... Read more

The Chronicle for Higher Education features an article which quotes Sarah Palin’s book America by Heart : Reflections on Family, Faith, and Flag as saying Most of those who write for the mainstream media and teach at universities and law schools don’t share the religious faith of their fellow Americans. They seem to regard people who believe in God and regularly attend their church or synagogue as alien beings, people who are ‘largely poor, uneducated and easy to command,’ as the... Read more

I am grateful to Larry Hurtado for having taken the time to reply once again and continue the conversation. I am very appreciative of the way Hurtado has nuanced his position, and agree with his stance to a large extent. I believe that his latest blog post in our conversation helps clarify both the extent of our agreement and the precise points on which we disagree. First, in The Only True God I cite a variety of inscriptions in addition... Read more

Chris Brady has been sharing podcasts from the session on Blogging and Online Publication at the Society of Biblical Literature conference. The most recent to be shared is of my own presentation, “The Blogging Revolution: New Technologies and their Impact on how we do Scholarship” (the text of the presentation can be found here). Thanks, Chris, for sharing these! The presentations were well received and generated good discussion at the conference itself, but it is good to see that conversation... Read more

While I’m reasonably content to wear the label “Liberal Christian” (even though adjectives like ‘Romantic’ and ‘Bultmannian’ are probably more accurate in indicating my views), I’m aware that many are uncomfortable with the term Liberal, as at once unhelpfully vague and as having negative connotations in certain circles. Perhaps instead we could talk about peer-reviewed Christianity. By this I mean an approach to Christian beliefs and practice which recognizes the provisional character of all human understanding and “truth”, and that... Read more
