Rhetoric Race and Religion
On April 12, 1864, Confederate General Nathan Bedford Forrest led a battle on Fort Pillow, a Union Army post located near Memphis. After the fort surrendered, Forrest continued the attack killing or wounding more than 500 Union soldiers and civilians. One-hundred-fifty years later, the debate continues. Was it a battle or a massacre?
