Pointedly, persistently and passionately, in both Old and New Testaments, the Bible calls us to humility. In Deuteronomy 8, Moses told the Israelites three times that God tested them in the wilderness for the express purpose of humbling them: “The Lord thy God led thee these forty years in the wilderness, to humble thee…and he humbled thee…that he might humble thee” (Deut. 8:2-3, 16, KJV, emphasis added). By inspiration the apostle Paul added that their trials were recorded as examples... Read more

Some followers of Christ can get so wrapped up in pursuing the details of His direction that they ignore the “road signs” He has put right in front of them. They don’t realize that in many cases, He has already prepared them for the journey, and all they need to do is move forward. Take a look at some of the heroes of the faith. Gideon was told he would defeat the Midianites. He was told to kill the second... Read more

The Word becomes flesh in us as we receive Him. God became flesh long ago through Christ and continues so today through us. As revelation of the Word of God renews our minds and descends into our hearts, we become different people. The Word gradually becomes flesh in us and thus transforms our whole being as we become living epistles and living Christ’s for today. Christ in us and through us, the hope of glory. Read more

Good leaders are called to lay down their lives for those they lead. They are not to be worldly takers but heavenly givers. They should lead in the nature of God, by becoming a source of life to others through authentic sharing of friendship, wisdom, and love. One of the greatest gifts we can give others is ourselves. Read more

Over the weekend, I caught a documentary on the Jim Jones episode which occurred some 30 years ago. What a horror story. The footage was remarkable. I didn’t know that there were recordings of Jones instructing those in his fold to “drink the Koolaid.” (It wasn’t exactly Koolaid.)  Jones was typical of leaders of his ilk. According to the experts who knew and studied him, he was highly gifted, charismatic (in personality), humorous, like-able, knew how to make people feel... Read more

Read more

Among the many complex and sublime faculties of the human soul, one attribute functions as a servant to all: the nature of the soul is porous. This means that in addition to latent strengths and talents, the soul is also shaped and developed by external stimuli: we learn customs and language, habits, virtues and vices largely by importing reality as it surrounds us. Indeed, the marrow of life itself, as we subjectively know it, is created by the inward flow... Read more

“But none of these things move me, neither count I my life dear unto myself, so that I might finish my course with joy, and the ministry, which I have received of the Lord Jesus, to testify the gospel of the grace of God.” (Act 20:24).  Emerson said, “The hero is no braver than the ordinary man; he just fights five minutes longer.” Perseverance in the face of difficulty is a quality that is indispensable in the lives of those... Read more
