Reminder: The Queer Theology Synchroblog is TOMORROW!

Reminder: The Queer Theology Synchroblog is TOMORROW! September 30, 2013

I originally  posted this a couple of weeks ago, but for those who still want to participate, I’m reposting as a reminder!

Who Wants To Create Some Queer Theology?

If you’re a regular reader of this site, you’ll know that I have a thing for feminist theology. I believe that, if there is a God who is anything like the God Christians talk about, she has a special place in her heart for the oppressed, the marginalized. For those who’ve been othered and treated as “less than” by the rest of society.

I believe that if you want to find God, the best thing to do is to listen to these people tell their stories.

Today, I want to promote someone who is doing work with another kind of theology that focuses on a group that is often marginalized by society. This October 1st, Fr. Shay Kearns, of the Anarchist Reverend blog and QueerTheology.com, invites queer and trans* people everywhere to create new theologies that talk about the gifts queer and trans* people have to offer their religions. This work is so important and I am so excited to read what people have to contribute.

If you are interested in participating but don’t have your own blog, Sarah Over the Moon will be open that day to guest posts on this subject. Just email me at moonsn11@gmail.com with your submission.

Remember, this is a chance for queer and trans* people to tell their stories, so if you are not queer or trans*, you can help by promoting the synchroblog on social media or your own blog! If any of my fellow bloggers or Patheos writers are interested in helping to spread the word, or want to interview the team behind QueerTheology.com, send them an email

The following is a crosspost from the QueerTheology.com, written by Fr. Shay Kearns, detailing the information:

At QueerTheology.com we believe that queer people have more to offer the world than what we are not. We believe that queer and trans* people have voices that matter; we have insights into theology and faith that deepen the conversation not just for other queer people but for non-queer people as well.

We believe that queer theology is about so much more than the clobber passages; about convincing people that we are worthy of love and of a place in religious community. We believe that the conversation around queer and trans* experience needs to be led by queer and trans* people.

Over the past two years Fr. Shay has hosted a synchroblog on queer theology, this year we’ve decided to move it to this site and to make it even bigger. The idea of the synchroblog is simple: On a certain day (this year, Tuesday October 1st) a group of people write on the same topic.

Our theme this year is “Queer Creation”

Our theme this year (submitted by @awhooker via twitter) is “Queer Creation”. You could write about the creation story from a queer perspective, about the queerness you find in creation, about how queer people create theology, etc. You can take this in any direction you want. It’s about creating new and vibrant queer theologies.

We want as many people to participate as possible, so please spread this call far and wide. You can post this graphic on your FB page, share it on twitter, use in on your blog, or send it to a friend via email.

Just a reminder: This is really about highlighting the gift of queer theology to the church and the world. This is not about apologetics, not about convincing other people that we are worthy, or that we should be given rights. All of those things have their place, but this is about something different. This is a time to focus on the positive contributions. The synchroblog is open to people of all faith traditions.

Okay, now on to the nitty gritty of how it works and some frequently asked questions:

What is a “Synchroblog”?

A synchroblog is when a group of people all write about the same topic on the same day and post it to their personal blogs.

How do I participate?

When you’ve written your post, post a comment including a link on this post. On Tuesday, October 1st we will compile all the links and and we’ll get it rolling! On the 1st, once our post with the links of all participating goes up it would be great if you would edit your post to include the links to all of the others participating (as that’s what makes a synchroblog really work)!

Can I make a video instead of writing a post?

Yes! Absolutely. Either embed the video into a blog post and send us that link, or send us the link to the video.

Do I have to be a theologian/academic/Christian?

No, no, and no! While QueerTheology.com focuses on Christian theology, this synchroblog is open to anyone who wants to write on the topic! Offer a personal reflection, a poem, or a video. Write about this from a Jewish perspective, from a Muslim perspective, from a Pagan perspective. If the topic of “Queer Creation” doesn’t resonate with you, or if you feel that queer theology isn’t important than maybe this synchroblog isn’t for you, but that’s totally your call.

I’m not queer or trans*, can I write a post?

We would really love for folks who want to be in solidarity with the queer and trans* community to use this opportunity to signal boost the voices of queer and trans* people. We would love for you to have a queer or trans* friend write a guest post for your blog, interview a queer or trans* friend about how their faith has been deepened by being queer, etc. And of course, we want you to read along and be inspired by the participants.

I don’t have a blog, can I still participate

If you don’t have a blog but would like to participate, please send us an email and we’ll work something out!

I’m still confused: What do I do (or my question wasn’t answered here)?

Send us an email and we’ll try to walk you through it.

Please spread this call far and wide.
