Here’s some interesting and important pieces from around the web! Also, a picture of one of my cats. “My challenge to straight cisgender Christians that are working out what it means to follow the Gospel of Jesus when it comes to LGBTQ people and issues is to spend time listening to us.” We’re finding God not in the church buildings, but in the streets. Reading queerly saved my faith. This notion that the most important thing is being on the... Read more

It’s the cool thing in more progressive branches of Christianity now to talk about how EVERYONE is welcome at the communion table. I should be glad about that, I guess. I mostly just serve communion to myself (sometimes a cat or two joins in) while locked in my bedroom nowadays. Not much of a “communion,” I know. I’m probably committing all sorts of blasphemy, but that’s the best I can do right now. Maybe if I swapped the leftover pizza... Read more

One of the most popular images of God in the Bible is the image of God the shepherd. Through this image, we see God as a humble, but loving and protective man. A man who wants all of his sheep–99 out of 100 isn’t enough!–to be safe. I particularly like this image, actually. It shows me a God that refuses to exclude the minority. A God that is not simply interested in getting in good with the popular crowd. It shows... Read more

My friend, Dani Kelley, and I were talking a few weeks ago on Facebook about the video game series The Legend of Zelda, and she had a brilliant idea: she wants “to play every single Zelda game…and…write about it.”  But as we all know, “It’s dangerous to go alone.”  So, Dani is inviting bloggers/tumblrs/twitterers to join her. Being the huge geek that I am, I’ll definitely be participating. I’m actually hoping to talk about the gender ideologies, and the feminist... Read more

I used to believe that the Church was the light of the world. A beacon of hope to a lost and dying world. I don’t believe that anymore, because I left the Church once. I slammed the door behind me and braced myself for the darkness. But when I stepped outside I saw light. I saw light everywhere like stars in a country sky. I’m glad I no longer believe that the Church is the last hope for a world lost... Read more

This post is part of a series called“You Are Not Your Own,” focusing on rape and sexual assault in Christian relationship/dating books Trigger Warning for rape, sexual assault, victim blaming, and dehumanization Note: this research mainly focused on female rape, so I am not sure if the same trends toward rape myth acceptance would apply in cases of male rape. If anyone wants to see if research has been done on that subject and report back, feel free. Though it is... Read more

Here are some important and interesting posts that you shouldn’t miss. The only thing my Double D’s ever got me was kicked out of church Bathsheba and Uriah’s victimization was insignificant compared to all the good David had done and was continuing to do. But God didn’t see it that way. The truth is, despite our differences in faith, our worldview is very similar.  We don’t need more charity and kind-hearted masters, we need justice and liberation.  Read more

Everybody (including myself) be accusing everybody of everything, and no one is discussing the actual content anymore. Anyone who still wants to chat can pack it up and move it to Twitter. Today I read a post on the blog  Rage Against... Read more

This post was originally published on October 13, 2012 bell hooks states in her book Feminist Theory, From Margin to Center: One aspect of sexual norms that many people find oppressive is the assumption that one “should” be engaged in sexual activity. This “should” is one expression of sexual coercion…When…emphasis is placed on ending sexual oppression…it is possible to envision a society in which it is as much of an expression of sexual freedom to choose not to participate in sexual... Read more
