Today the kids had their annual peace day concert.  All of the classes perform a selection of songs that encourage peace, unity, and dignity for all people.  It’s one of my favorite Haggerty events, and I was more than a little sad to think we may not be a part of the Haggerty community next year when we (hopefully) move to Roxbury.  This year Ms. Irvin Kent outdid herself.  There was dancing, instrument playing, and sign language to accompany the... Read more

Hello, my name is Osheta Moore and I’m a Target-a-holic.  It’s been eleven days, seven hours, ten minutes, and three seconds since I checked out at Target after an hour’s wander.  Recently, I  put away my Target Check Card because of our family’s “oh no we’re waiting on our appropriation’s spending freeze” and now I’m struggling.   I wasn’t always this way. I was an equal opportunity shopper.  Shaw’s, CVS, Trader Joes– they all received my patronage.  When the kids... Read more

I don’t want to be writing this blog post right now.  Don’t get me wrong, I love, love, love you for being a reader, caring about my life, and stroking my creative ego… but God has been working on me this morning about writing this post and I’m wrestling with him.  I have to write this post… I can’t get away from it…  I turn to the piles of laundry and I want to scowl at them–they’re never satisfied, always... Read more

Last year’s Scavenger Hunt The kids were on the verge of cabin fever last night. Tyson came in from drama club hungry and full of post-improv energy. The babies (T.J. and Trinity) just finished their screen time and as usual, once the screen goes off and their minds begin turning back on, they have a glazed-over, confused look about them. ‘What do we do now that the TV is turned off?’ they seem to silently asked to each other. Tyson... Read more

Today I read a Facebook status about adoption. Two of our good friends finally got the numbers they need to move their international adoption forward and my heart was overjoyed. I’ve been fascinated by this family’s journey towards unity chronicled on Facebook. For the past month or two, I prayed when they prayed, mourned when they mourned, and finally today I rejoiced when they rejoiced.Of course, I rejoiced as a friend who loves them, but this victory touched me on... Read more

T.C. ambled into the kitchen last Monday morning, looking to begin his Sabbath with a hearty breakfast and examined the muffins on the stove. He eyed them dubiously from each side and asked, ‘What are those?”.His reticence to grab a muffin and pop it in his mouth wasn’t due to unmet breakfast expectations. No, he’s a burned man, recovering from the greatest of betrayals. Ever since VeggieGate 2008 where yours truly was implicated of sneaking sweet potato puree into chocolate... Read more

Today TJ threw a fit. He cried, pouted, and twirled himself into the curtain at my kitchen door. From his linen cave of despair he uttered muffled lamentations that “life’s not fair”! Did I take away his Beyblade? No. Did I take his brother’s side in an argument? Nope. Did I ground him from a playdate? No way. Did I tell him we were going to serve homeless kids? You got it! And the boy wasn’t tolerating mama’s crazy!Yes, it’s... Read more
