Mother’s day is a good time to give thanks to our mothers for giving us life and raising us, but we all have a history of spiritual nurture as well as physical. Sometimes our biological mothers are also in many ways our spiritual mothers, but for many this is far from the case. On this mother’s day, honor all of your mothers. Baptism, fully embracing life as Christians in the church, reconfigures what family means to us. Our new family of baptism becomes more important than our blood ties, and our parents, if they are Christians, become brothers and sisters in Christ. What does your family of water look like compared to your family of blood? Draw the family trees and spend some time thinking about them. Pray for those in both configurations.
