The Wake-Up Call

It began with a routine medical appointment – the kind many of us schedule out of obligation. My husband and I went for a full health assessment, including blood tests and diagnostic parameters. When the results arrived, they formed a comprehensive Health Portfolio.

The experience was sobering. Seeing deviations from the norm on a page has a way of focusing the mind. I immediately shifted my lifestyle: I adhered to the diet charts, prioritized exercise, and aligned my habits with medical standards. Fear gripped me momentarily, but my peace was restored when I leaned into my faith.

However, once my health stabilized, a profound thought struck me: Why am I so meticulously concerned with a body that may last 70 or 80 years, yet so casual about the spirit that lives forever?

The Invisible Core

We are more than just physical or social beings. Modern society has made great strides in recognizing Mental Health, yet we often ignore the most vital component: the Spirit.

The spirit is the root of who we are. Caring for it determines our total well-being. Real holistic health is impossible if we are physically fit but spiritually bankrupt. To remain “fit for eternity,” we must look at the spiritual parallels of our basic survival needs.

Your Spiritual Diagnostic Checklist

To maintain a healthy spiritual portfolio, we must evaluate five essential ingredients:

1. The Breath of Life (The Holy Spirit)

Just as air is the first requirement for life, the Holy Spirit is our spiritual oxygen. In the beginning, God breathed into man, and he became a living soul. Through Christ, that indwelling presence is restored to us. Without being “infilled” and conscious of the heavenly realm, we become susceptible to the “pollution” of base instincts and negative emotions.

2. The Manna of the Word (Nutrition)

During His wilderness temptation, Jesus declared that man does not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.

The Problem: Many today live “by bread alone,” chasing material wealth and possessions.

The Cure: True life force comes from consuming and connecting with the Scriptures. It is the nutrition that builds our resistance against the ravages of “spiritual disease.”

3. The Fountain of Wisdom (Hydration)

Water makes up 60% of our physical bodies, and spiritually, we require the same level of saturation. The Word of God acts as a cleansing agent—the “washing of water by the word” (Ephesians 5:26). When we believe, Jesus promised that “rivers of living water” would flow from within us, cooling, cleansing, and refreshing our souls.

4. The Shelter of Community (Protection)

No one is meant to be a “loner” in their faith. Just as a home protects us from harsh weather, the Church (the Community of Faith) acts as our shelter.

Family: A place for psychological safety and raising the next generation.

The Body of Christ: A city of refuge that provides a canopy of authority, prayer, and wise counsel to shield us from spiritual attacks.

5. Spiritual Vitality (Exercise and Rest)

A healthy spirit requires action. If we neglect meeting together, serving others, or renewing our minds, our faith becomes anemic and weak. We must balance our “work” for the Kingdom with “rest” in the Lord’s presence to prevent burnout and spiritual decay.

A Call to Calibration

The post-pandemic world has taught us that health is our greatest wealth. We now prioritize gym time, sleep, and nutrition for our bodies. But what about your soul?

If we make decisions based only on worldly philosophy, we are building treasures that fade away. We risk becoming like a garden without a fence—exposed and overgrown.

May we wake up to take care of our individual and family health today. Let us calibrate our lives to the standards of the Word, ensuring we are not just surviving, but thriving as the salt and light of the earth.
