Pope's 'special envoy' blunder infuriates Scranton Catholics

Pope's 'special envoy' blunder infuriates Scranton Catholics February 20, 2018

There was uproar among Catholics in Scranton, Pennsylvania, when it was announced last week that Pope Francis had chosen disgraced Cardinal Roger Mahony, above, to be his special envoy at an event to celebrate the local diocese’s 150th anniversary Mass on March 4.
Their anger was understandable. For, according to this report, Mahony – Archbishop Emeritus of Los Angeles – had been disciplined for covering up his knowledge of priests who had committed sex crimes against youngsters. The perpetrators were counselled, transferred out of his diocese, and went on on to repeat their abuse.
After some local Catholics threatened, according to Church Militant, to protest at the event, Mahony said he will now not attend the Scranton Dioceses’s shindig.
The announcement of Mahony’s attendance, since removed from the Internet by the diocese, says in this cached version:

“We are most grateful to our Holy Father for appointing Cardinal Mahony to be his personal envoy for this special celebration, and we are honored that the Cardinal has so graciously accepted this invitation,” said Bishop Joseph C. Bambera. “This expression of the Pope’s pastoral support is another blessing as we mark the founding of our Diocese, and we look forward to welcoming His Eminence Cardinal Mahony to celebrate this historic milestone with us.”

Bill Genello, the diocese’s Executive Director of Communications, said yesterday:

Bishop Bambera was informed late last week that his Eminence, Roger Cardinal Mahony, is unable to attend the Mass.

Bishop Bambera, left with egg on his face
Mahony, who, as Archbishop of Los Angeles, covered up priestly sex abuse was disciplined in 2013 by his successor Archbishop Jose Gomez. Gomez banned Mahony from “any administrative or public duties”.
LifeSiteNews reported at the time:

After a court order requiring the Archdiocese of Los Angeles to release documents some of which expose Mahony’s cover-up of sexual abuse by priests, Gomez publicly censured Mahony who retired after 25 years of being Cardinal Archbishop of the city in 2011.

“Effective immediately, I have informed Cardinal Mahony that he will no longer have any administrative or public duties,” said a public letter issued by Archbishop Gomez Thursday.

The documents, some 12,000 pages, show that Mahony purposely concealed from the public his knowledge of priests who had committed sex crimes with youth, transferring the perpetrators after they received counseling only to have them sexually abuse again and again.

The abuses were so severe that current Archbishop Jose Gomez commented Thursday, “I find these files to be brutal and painful reading. The behavior described in these files is terribly sad and evil.”

Mahony’s day-to-day life was largely unchanged following the decision. The cleric could continue to live at a North Hollywood parish and offer Mass while remaining a “priest in good standing”, Church Militant reported.
Pope Francis’ appointment of Mahony as his special envoy came just before news emerged about the pontiff’s own role in the promoting rather than punishing a sex abuser and sex abuser-enabling clerics.
Francis claimed he’d never received any information about the role Chilean Bishop Juan Barros had in child sex abuse. But it turns out Cardinal Sean O’Malley had personally delivered him a letter from a victim.

So the RCC cabol got slapped a little, good!!! keep it up!

  • andym

Yet another PR fuck-up by the one appointed for his PR skills. He’s outliving his usefulness to the Vatican.

  • Broga

“we are honored that the Cardinal has so graciously accepted this invitation”.
That’s nice. They do love the clerical bullshit.

Henri: If it was my child there would be another encounter rather less spiritual.

  • barriejohn

Henri: Just to put the record straight, it would appear that he said that the Confessional is “a spiritual encounter with God”, though what he is claiming is very dangerous.

Now, let’s imagine Mahony, Bambera and the good old pope worked for Oxfam….

AgentCormac: Or what about a public school? We have just watched a programme exposing the paedophilia in public schools and the safe havens they provided for the abusers.
These outfits produce our leaders. But have no fear. A spokesman for them said it wasn’t happening today – held to the highest possible standards ………….fill the rest in yourself. However a recent pupil popped up and said it was. The government is “considering” making it mandatory for the schools to report abuse.

@barriejohn: thanks for the clarification; I couldn’t believe that even an Aussie RC Bishop could have been that blatant.
But the true story lays plain one of the main issues: the so-called sanctity of the confessional, which the RCC has been allowed to get away with for centuries on the grounds that canon law trumps secular law. I am sure that it is an unquestioning acceptance of this sophistry that has led the (RC) Education Secretary to allow taxpayer-funded RC schools to discriminate in favour of children of RC parents in their admission policies. It is about time that this presumption was challenged.

Frank the pope, looking into his personal copy of “Poor behaviour for Dummies” made a decision which like many others he’s made, to promote a proven dodgy Bishop. Frank was presented with a difficult choice, that is, is there a Bishop with no blood on his hands still lingering in the gilded halls of Vatican inc.? After attacking a google search, Frank was left with very few options and so it became another super embarrassing slip up by the bloke who apparently sits on his chosen deity’s right hand.

They should let Mahoney arrive – and then arrest his ass.

  • sowa

Is Bergoglio losing it or what? First his Chile comment after which he immedietely departed like some cheap Internet troll, now this.

  • andym

@sowa. I think so. Hardly surprising really. His job was an impossible one-to make a criminal organisation look cuddly and non-threatening. The Vatican won’t mess about. He’s plenty of enemies there already.

I see Billy Graham has just popped his clogs.

These events in the hierarchy of the Catholic Church should not be confused with the Catholic religion. Faithful Catholics ask your tolerance, if not your prayers, so that the very clear message of Jesus is allowed to penetrate the thick smoke of satan at this most important time in history. We are wounded by corrupt bishops at every turn and surrounded by many good priests who will not disobey their bishop. Thank you for your patience, and don’t confuse us with these people. Thanks.
