THE number of gods and demi-gods in Hindu mythology beggars belief. Now one more has been added to the religion’s pantheon of 33 million deities. Reuters reported yesterday that devotees in Shuklapur village, in the northern state of Uttar Pradesh, erected a shrine to “Corona Mata” and are offering her prayers in the hope that divine intervention will banish the deadly virus. Since she was erected, “Mother Corona”, has been the recipient of  prayers, “holy” water, and flowers at a… Read more

AFTER pastor Lewis Clemons, of Kingdom Awareness Ministries International in Columbus, Georgia, refused to acknowledge and record a public apology for allegedly sexual assault his finances took a massive hit. In 2017,  according to The Christian Post, Lequita Jackson and another of Clemons’ former congregants, Lakisha Smith, accused the pastor in a civil lawsuit of using his position as a spiritual leader to sexually abuse them. In a letter to Clemons, Jackson’s lawyers said: To seriously discuss settling this case,… Read more

IN 2016 Medical News Today carried this intriguing headline: Religious experience activates same brain circuits as ‘sex, drugs, and rock ‘n’ roll’. I was reminded of that article today when I read in the National Catholic Register that Catholics in America are getting more and more agitated over the pace at which cannabis is being legalised. I actually laughed out loud when I got to the bit that said: Catholic moral theology is generally opposed to recreational use [of cannabis]… Read more

AMBER Adler is the first Orthodox Jewish woman to run for city council in her Brooklyn district, which includes a number of ultra-Orthodox neighborhoods. But because many Ultra Orthodox media outlets in the area refuse to carry any female faces, the 37-year-old started using images of her two sons – aged 7 and 9 – holding up signs on her behalf. And that infuriated at  least one reader called Monica who commented on a Jerusalem Post report about the erasure… Read more

AS if turning folk into walking magnets weren’t bad enough, vaccines will put those who administer them in the awkward position of having to answer to The Almighty for meddling with people’s genes. Addressing the Ohio House Health Committee on Tuesday, Dr Sherri Tenpenny – a “super-spreader of vaccine disinformation” – said: For those of you that say that you are Christians, what will your life review look like at the end of your life?. Will the Lord say to… Read more

WHEN the Lutherans in Pennsylvania decided in the 1970s to commission a movie about the awful ways in which the elderly are often treated, they chose a promising young filmmaker called George A Romero to direct what was intended to be a public service announcement (PSA) movie. Choosing Romero, above, was a blunder of biblical proportions. Clearly they had no idea that the director, who died in 2017 aged 77, was on a path to become a prolific and much-admired… Read more

AROUND three years have elapsed since it was first reported that two Californian nuns treated a Catholic school in which they worked as their own personal ‘ATM’ – and siphoned off  around $835,000 to pay for gambling jaunts. At the time it was reported by Tampa Bay Times that Sister Mary Margaret Kreuper, principal of St James Catholic School,  and her “best friend” teacher Sister Lana Chan, right – both of whom had taken vows of poverty and were members… Read more

ON Sunday, just days after Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau told the Catholic Church to ‘take responsibility’ for the abuse in its schools of indigenous Canadians children, demonstrators toppled a statue of Canadian public education official Egerton Ryerson in Toronto. The toppling of the statue, according to The Independent, came a day after Pope Francis said that he felt “pain” over the treatment of native children attending mainly Catholic schools – but stopped well short of an apology. Well before… Read more

BEFORE he was ousted from the White House, Donald Trump issued a flurry of pardons to cronies, including Roger Stone who was indicted on charges of lying to Congress. (Stone has just claimed that the pardon happened because the former President was ‘blackmailed.’) Excluded from Trump’s list of pardons was one of his most ardents supporters: creationist jailbird Kent Hovind, above, who was jailed for tax-related offences in 2006. He was hoping that his hero Trump would pardon him too… Read more
