Britain’s Mr Secularism says he often finds his perceived enemies to be “personable, charming and friendly”. Terry Sanderson (pictured), president of the National Secular Society, makes his comments in what he calls his “Mid-Winter Message”. “Since I became president of the National Secular Society,” he writes, “I have been aware that some religious people, who only know me through this public persona, regard me as some kind of hateful monster who is trying to kill their faith. People who know… Read more

OH, dear, they’re off again! Catholics and Anglicans in Australia are in a snit over a very funny nativity TV commercial created for electronic goods retailers Betta Electrical which depicts the baby Jesus tossing crap gifts back at the three wise men. The words “Give a Better Gift” then flashes across the screen. Christian leaders immediately branded the ad as “tacky and offensive”. Huffed senior Sydney Anglican bishop Glenn Davies: The gifts that the wise men were giving were appropriate… Read more

A cross-party group of MPs want ensure that homophobic Christians can continue to express their views on gay people. They’ve tabled an amendment to that effect, effectively seeking to amend the government’s proposal to make a criminal offence of incitement to hatred on the grounds of sexual orientation. Among them, as we might expect, are a pair of Catholics: Anne Widdecombe (pictured) and Jim Dobbin. A pressure group called Christian Concern for our Nation wants its supporters to put pressure… Read more

Every so often someone complains s/he can’t follow a particular superstition because of the demands of work. British Airways seems to have copped for it twice recently. There was the case of Nadia Eweida, and her wish to wear a cross or crucifix (read about that here). BA backed down. Now a Jewish man is claiming – according to Britain’s Daily Telegraph – a similar restriction: they won’t let him have Saturday off to pursue his religion: Daniel Rosenthal, a… Read more

THE “Religion of Peace” has been sounding off again – with the language of violence. According to Adnkronos, a top Muslim cleric in Iran – Hojatolislam Gholam Reza Hassani – declared this week that women in Iran who do cover themselves up should die. And not only these shameless tarts, but their husbands and fathers too! Pondered the Iranian nut-job who leads Friday prayers in the city of Urumieh, in Iranian Azerbaijan: I do not understand how these women who… Read more

YOUR image, frankly, is crap – and the organisation you head is constantly being trashed, particularly in films. So who do you recruit for a root-and-branch make over? Why, a gay man, of course – preferably one with a background in film and opera. What! Even if your name is Pope Benedict XVI!? Yes, we too did a double-take when we learned this week that the ghastly old faggot-basher has apparently invited Franco Zefferelli to improve both his own image,… Read more

AND you thought it could happen only in America! Think again. Britain looks like getting its own creationism adventure park, where kids can be indoctrinated into the idea that Earth is about six thousand years old and man and the dinosaurs coexisted. According to today’s Observer, “The 5,000-capacity park will be the first of its kind in Britain, but not in the world.” No, there are some in the USA, including the Holy Land Experience in Florida, and Dinosaur Adventure… Read more

Psst! Wanna be a Muslim? Wanna try living under sharia? Well take a look at this Channel 4 prog this evening (8 o’clock). Make Me a Muslim features a gay hairdresser, an atheist taxi driver, a skincare centre manager, a glamour model and a mixed-race couple. TV bosses seem to think this bit of suck-it-and-see, ooh-fancy-that!, well-I-never! nonsense masquerading as reality TV will penetrate some sort of mystique about Islam, somehow make us all “understand” it more. Why they can’t just… Read more

THE man behind Jerry Springer: The Opera is afraid “idiots” would close down a similar enterprise – so he says he won’t be doing anything like that again. Stuart Lee (left) says he suffered financially because Christians orchestrated a campaign against the opera. Even though judges have decided that JS:TO is not blasphemous, Lee says the controversy surrounding the show could nonetheless stop people from investing in such projects. He told the free-speech group Index on Censorship (reproduced on the Chortle website),… Read more

INTERNET saviors b3ta have been running an “alternative xmas card” competition this week. There is a veritable feast of festive fun on their message board as a result (some of it NSFW, so be careful). The Freethinker picked out six of the best for your delectation. First, the most accomplished of many pun-derful creations – “Baby Cheeses in a Manger”, by NobbyNobody: Next, an animated expression which the Church of England will probably find a bit close to the bone,… Read more
