MALAYSIA has shut down a newspaper for a month after it published a picture of Jesus holding a cigarette and what appears to be a can of beer. Prime Minister Abdullah Badawi himself stepped in this week to admonish the editors of Makkal Osai, a Tamil-language paper. The country’s publishing laws allow politicians to close any publication without judicial approval. Christians who complained about the picture say they are bemused as they had accepted the paper’s apology. Sensing perhaps that… Read more

ONE of Britain’s most hate-filled websites – Christian Voice – was temporarily silenced last week following a complaint to Pipex, which hosts the website via a subsidiary company called 123.reg. The homophobic website, run by Stephen “Stay a virgin, marry a virgin” Green, was closed down for four days pending investigations by Pipex into a complaint lodged against it by the Brighton-based gay newspaper, One80News after it had been contacted by a reader, Angie Rowland-Stuart. She told the paper that… Read more

ISRAEL’s one and only crematorium has gone up in flames after it was torched by arsonists believed to be Orthodox Jews. After the attack on the facility, Yehuda Meshi Zavah who heads ZAKA, the Orthodox group best known for collecting Jewish body parts for burial after suicide attacks, said that although he opposed any act of criminality, he was nevertheless pleased with the outcome, given his organisation’s commitment to protecting the holiness of human bodies even after death According to… Read more

HOMOSEXUALS are not black or Asian as a rule, they are overwhelmingly white … We at the Freethinker have come to expect some pretty wacky statements from Britain’s God-Botherer-in-Chief, Stephen Green, Christian Voice’s head honcho, but this pronouncement beggars even our belief. Let me put his statement in context. Green was miffed that fascists in the form of the National Front were given permission to mount a demonstration against those attending August’s Gay Pride event in Brighton. In a report… Read more

SERGEI Torop was a traffic cop in the small Russian town of Minusinsk until 1989, when he announced that he was the Son of God. Now, according to The Age, Melbourne, he commands a following of thousands in the Siberian mountains. “It’s all very complicated,” he starts quietly, his long brown hair framing a beatific smile. “But to keep things simple, yes, I am Jesus Christ. That which was promised must come to pass.” Meet the Messiah of Siberia, Vissarion… Read more

NORWAY’S Princess Maertha Louise appears to be away with the fairies – or rather the angels. Fourth in line to the Norwegian throne, the princess had Norwegians shaking their heads in disbelief when she announced her plans to open a school to teach people how to make contact with their angels. The project has been criticised in Norway where some have called for the 35-year-old princess, a devotee of alternative therapies, to renounce her official title – and even get… Read more

A SERIES of 12 photographs depicting Jesus as gay enraged the Pope, and they have now become the focus of attack by fundamentalist Christians in Sweden. Earlier this week, according to the Swedish paper The Local, a fight broke out outside the Ecce Homo photo exhibition, by Swedish artist Elisabeth Ohlson Wallin in the town of Jönköping when a group of religious fanatics set fire to a poster of the wall of the cultural centre hosting the exhibition. The exhibition… Read more

WILEY S Drake, a Buena Park pastor and a former national leader of America’s Southern Baptist Convention, has called on his followers to pray for the deaths of two leaders of Americans United for Separation of Church and State. Drake wants God to take time off from his favourite pastime of messing about with vegetables (see below) because the secularist organisation had the temerity to urge the IRS on Tuesday to investigate Drake’s church’s nonprofit status. This arose as a… Read more

Chalk up another premature death due to superstitious causes. Margaret Rose Cornelius, 72 year-old grandmother of seven and mother-in-law of Motörhead guitarist Phil Campbell, died after refusing a blood transfusion because she was a Jehovah’s Witness. Her daughter, Gaynor Campbell, claims that elders from the church visited her in hospital to ensure she would stick to her religion’s strict ban on blood transfusions. Gaynor believes she could have talked her into accepting a transfusion had the Jehovah’s Witlesses not got to… Read more
