JONATHAN Edwards, the golden boy of Christianity who retired from athletics in 2003, has ditched God. The latest issue of the Freethinker reveals that, “Having left his sport as a dyed-in-the-wool evangelical, Edwards is now, to all intents and purposes, an atheist.” The news, however, has failed to filter through to The Goal website, devoted to profiling Christian athletes. “The Heart and Soul of the World of Sport”, as it dubs itself, persists in portraying Edwards as an evangelical Christian… Read more

A meeting of atheists legally organised by a young American soldier currently on active duty in Iraq was sabotaged by a Christian fundamentalist major, who verbally abused the four junior enlisted soldiers who attended the gathering. The major, according to Kathleen Johnson, Military Director of American Atheists, Inc, accused the soldiers of plotting against Christians and disrespecting those soldiers who have died protecting the Constitution. He also threatened them with punishment for their activities and said he would do whatever… Read more

Ever wonder why Muslims and Muslim youth, in particular, in the UK are so angry? Could it be that they are lumbered with a no-brainer religion that denies them (to name but a few, and in no particular order): Bacon butties Premarital sex Mobile phones with musical ring-tones Masturbation Piercings and tattoos Nightclubs Alcohol Gay relationships Jobs where alcohol and bacon butties are served to (and by) inked and perforated people who have premarital sex and gay relationships – ie… Read more

I am an avid reader of the Stardust Musings blog, where one can find an astonishing number of items of interest to us infidels. Today, for example, I discovered this heartening item under the heading Atheist bookshelves growing: I went to a Border’s bookstore in a Northwest Indiana town with my mother a couple days ago near where she lives (she lives in Illinois near the Illinois/Indiana border). Indiana, for the most part is pretty well-populated with Southern Baptists and… Read more

A controversial sculpture of Pope Benedict XVI wearing nothing but a blond bob wig, a stole, panties, thigh-high stockings – and a lascivious ‘come hither, my son’ expression – has been pulled from a gay exhibition in Milan. Curator Eugenio Viola told Associated Press: “It was made clear to us that it would be better to remove the piece.” The humourphobic Catholic Anti-Defamation League protested over the appearance of the sculpture, claiming it defamed the head of state of the… Read more

THE National Secular Society today welcomed a ruling by the Advertising Standards Agency against a full page advertisement in The Times seeking to raise alarm about the Sexual Orientation equality legislation debated in Parliament earlier this year. The Society was one of the complainants. The advertisements were placed by Coherent and Cohesive Voice. Terry Sanderson, President of the National Secular Society said: ‘We are extremely pleased that this advertisement has been shown to be misleading. There is an increasing tendency… Read more

A Muslim fundamentalist with a good deal more money than sense – and a penchant for distinctly dodgy suits – is flooding schools and universities with an expensive tome entitled the Atlas of Creation. The book, by Adnan Oktar of Turkey who writes under the name Harun Yahya, claims that creatures today are just like creatures that lived in the fossil past, so evolution must be impossible. He says he seeks to unmask ‘the imposture of evolutionists’, and the links… Read more

Would that we had a new agenda, a sexually-informed education system that truly empowered teens, that taught open-minded respect for bodies and flesh, pleasure and joy and physical/spiritual awareness. Sure, include STDs and appropriate birth-control information, but not as a deterrent, not as some sort of nasty weapon of fear. Rather, arm your virgin daughters and inept sons with slick and giddy reverence for the joys of the flesh, for its potential to transform and ease tension and make you… Read more

THE recently formed Council of Ex-Muslims have issued a manifesto saying that “no one should be pigeonholed as Muslims with culturally relative rights nor deemed to be represented by regressive Islamic organisations and ‘Muslim community leaders.'” The manifesto adds: “Those of us who have come forward with our names and photographs represent countless others who are unable or unwilling to do so because of the threats faced by those considered ‘apostates’ – punishable by death in countries under Islamic law…. Read more

A growing number of non-Muslims in the UK are growing more and more concerned that permission will be granted to the Muslim sect Tablighi Jamaat to build a mega-mosque at the site of the London Olympics in the east of the Capital. When the proposal emerged it was envisaged that the first phase of the mosque alone would accommodate 10,000 worshippers. But, the final number, including visitors, could be as many as 70,000. Many experts describe Tablighi Jamaat, whose name… Read more
