An upcoming Justice Department investigation will allege sweeping patterns of discrimination in Ferguson.
“The report, which could be released as soon as Wednesday, will charge that police disproportionately use excessive force against blacks and that black drivers are stopped and searched far more often than white motorists, even though they’re less likely to be carrying contraband.” -AP
That’s interesting given the many snipes and tropes jaunted out in defense of the blue line of courage. I love my cops. I have friends that put their lives on the line every day to protect me. Cops – have saved me – and have persecuted me at the same time. I have a personal love and hate relationship with them! I almost feel special when they give me my own private escort out of some places (sarcasm) – and yet, when I’m picking a late night train to get on NY from Uptown to the deep inners BK – I might make him my new best friend. And as long as he doesn’t have a chip on his shoulder or a bias, we might even have a great conversation before he gets off about 5 stops before I need him the most. I’ve argued both sides of Ferguson and I keep coming back to – it’s the way we police. It’s the mistrust – it’s the dehumanizing policies that presume guilt, it’s the “other” mentality that taints the equation. It’s the inequality. Even if Michael Brown was guilty of what is alleged and then some – for many, its less relevant than the notion that if he were anything other than a young black youth – he might have walked away. I don’t know what was in the heart of Officer Wilson but if this report suggest that there is a pattern of discrimination that exists throughout the department – the national conversation, is not done! I can’t wait to read the whole report. Inequality – is a Humanists issue, regardless of race.
