Dear God,

I raised my arms for you to pick me up,
Naked and unafraid.
Hold me daddy.
Love me.

You let me go,
Then you were gone.

You had the keys to my heart.
You knew Everything..
Whispered secrets,
Hidden hopes, My desires.

Adolescent desperations,
Shouted into the wind.

I crawled back to the Garden, God.
Broken and trembling, God.
I Collapsed at Eve’s feet, God.
I don’t know if she ever truly loved you, God.
But she loved me.

The apple pie cooled on her table.
Adam cut a piece for himself, and one for me.
It tasted like love.

Adam had his faults, God,
but he worked hard, God.
He fashioned me out of his clay, God.

He taught me everything he knew, God.
His back never broke, God
But his heart did, God.

His heart did.

Together, their minds broke too, God.

As little children, they returned to the dust,
And left me to tend the Garden.
Alone, God.
Oh God, alone.

I went and sat at Mother Mary’s side.
Blessed was she among all women,
And blessed was the fruit of her womb.

But she had pain unimagined, God.

Slow at first,
and soft Like a building, nagging cough, God.
But ruthless and patient,
Like your silent waiting serpent, God.
I wanted to chase it away, God.
Run it away!

Away from her golden fields.

But instead you squeezed her life out too, God.
Why her too God?

Mary’s eyes were calm as you did it, God.
She smiled and died, God.

I smiled and cried, God.

Jesus came to me with soothing words,
A stepfather’s son with a redheaded stepfather’s promises.
He had been forsaken too, God.
He was as reliable as you God.
In the end, he was a Scriptural suicide.
And I was sympathetic.

Weakness coursed through my veins, God.
My bones dripped out my shoes, God.
But I learned, God…

To be strong, To be quick,
To be quiet and awake God.

And then I heard, God.

The most amazing thing.

I heard people…
Laughing and crying, God.
Learning to fly, God.
Living and dying, God,

Letting you go, God.

I heard myself, God.
I heard my heart, God.
And it beat in another chest.

Naked and unafraid.
Hold me, daddy.
Love me, daddy.

And I did, God.

Dear God,
I did.
