In the aftermath of Waco, Texas Republicans prepare to pass open carry for handguns. The Texas Senate approved a bill on Friday that would allow the open carry of handguns, permitting residents to carry licensed handguns openly in a shoulder or belt holster. The bill passed 19-12 vote, within weeks of a Waco shooting that resulted in the death of nine. It’s expected to sail through the Republican dominated Senate. Republican Senator Don Hoffines had proposed an amendment to limit… Read more

The Narrative We Thought We Knew The Baltimore riots were an easy narrative to follow for most Americans. Many of our biases, played into a straightforward story that in its totality made sense. It fed our self-affirming beliefs (cops hate black people, blacks are violent), neglecting the nuance and intrinsic context of both.  It was anger at the death of another unarmed black man, followed by outrage, apathy, victim blaming, protests, and (the very optional) riot. It had a morose familiarity. Except,… Read more

Racist Principal Fired. Devil keeps job with pay, pending investigation. Nancy Gordeuk of TNT Academy, has been dismissed. Gordeuk, the principal and founder of TNT Academy made news this week after her racist rant, during a recent Georgia graduation, went viral. It’s garnered international (and very unwanted) attention for the educator. “You people are so rude to not listen to this speech,” Gordeuk said, as the unidentified valedictorian, a white person, stood near her while people filed out. “It was my… Read more

Secularism is rising in the US while Christianity saw a sharp and marked decline. Its not just the nones, or the unaffiliated, this time. People identifying as Atheists and Agnostics, are up too! The numbers are in: The Christian share of the U.S. population is declining, while the number of U.S. adults who do not identify with any organized religion is growing, according to an extensive new survey by the Pew Research Center. Here’s one big take away: In 2007, there were… Read more

So you want to be a leader in the atheist movement? It could cost you. Remember that time when you called Dawkins a prick (maybe even to his face)? Called Harris a tone-deaf Islamic bigot? Or perhaps you said a little something about Hitchens being a misogynistic self-absorbed pompous, war-mongering ass, who was too hard on his liver? OK, maybe that last one was just me. Now imagine someone suing you over it. Bria Crutchfield is being sued for 50k…. Read more

Someone told me that the “revolution will not be televised”. Have you turned on the news lately? It’s not the Gil Scott-Heron version of revolution, but two large scale independent riots, in Ferguson and now in Baltimore, in response to the same issue of police brutality against other Americans, it tells me that civil unrest in this form, though ugly, contagious, and vicious – is here again. When people pour into the streets of France, the Middle East, Africa, and around… Read more

Dad, am I an atheist too? The question you don’t expect to hear from a three year old. It was a beautiful Saturday afternoon and my daughter and I were enjoying a sunny day at the park. Nothing picks me up quicker than the sound of children’s laughter, and my daughter is a giggle box with a penchant for asking unconventional, yet poignant, questions. She’s a smart little whip who is very opinionated. (She also has a slight lisp, which magnifies… Read more

The Catholic Church is too feminine – according to Fox Guest Rachel Campos-Duffy, best known for her stint on MTV’s “The Real World: San Francisco,” appeared on Tuesday’s episode of Fox News’ “Outnumbered” to discuss the recent arrest of six people in Minneapolis and San Diego who were plotting to join the Islamic State. Might be interesting. Campos veered into weird territory though, when she stated: The real problem is that Christianity has become too “feminized,” and it’s Pope… Read more

Sharpton and various activists are on a hunger strike. Loretta Lynch’s allies are launching a hunger strike until she’s confirmed as attorney general. A hunger strike. Could that actually work? The advocacy group founded by the Rev. Al Sharpton, along with female civil-rights leaders, are planning the hunger strike, in which groups of fasters will alternate days abstaining from food until Lynch is confirmed to replace Eric Holder at the Justice Department. Dubbed “Confirm Loretta Lynch Fast,” the new tactic… Read more
