A Book Born from Suffering
The Book of Lamentations is not an easy read. It was written by the prophet Jeremiah after one of the most devastating moments in Israel’s history…the destruction of Jerusalem by the Babylonians. The Temple was reduced to rubble, the city was burned, and the people of God were carried off into exile.
Everything that once symbolized stability, identity, and God’s presence seemed lost.
And yet, right in the middle of this sorrow, we encounter one of the most beautiful affirmations of hope in all of Scripture: “Great is Your faithfulness.”
This reminds us of something profound—faith does not ignore suffering; it speaks into it.
God’s Mercy in the Darkness
What makes Lamentations so powerful is that it does not deny pain. Jeremiah does not pretend everything is fine. He mourns, he grieves, and he cries out. But in the midst of that grief, he remembers something deeper: God’s mercy has not run out.
“The Lord’s great love… His compassions never fail.”
God’s love is not fragile. It is not dependent on circumstances. It is not exhausted by our failures or diminished by our struggles. Even when everything around us feels like it is falling apart, His mercy remains steady.
This is not a shallow optimism—it is a deep, unshakable truth.

New Every Morning
One of the most comforting lines in this passage is this: “They are new every morning.”
Every day we wake up is a reminder that God has not given up on us.
No matter what happened yesterday—failures, pain, uncertainty—God’s mercy is renewed. We are not living off leftovers of grace. We are receiving fresh mercy, fresh compassion, and fresh strength each day.
This means:
- Yesterday does not define you
- Today is not beyond redemption
- Tomorrow is still in God’s hands
God meets us right where we are, again and again.
The Promise of Christ
Jeremiah’s message ultimately points forward. Even in the midst of judgment and exile, God was preparing a greater restoration—a restoration fulfilled in Jesus Christ.
Through Christ, we see the fullness of God’s faithful love. He enters into our suffering, carries our burdens, and opens the way for true healing and hope.
What Lamentations whispers in sorrow, the Gospel proclaims in victory:
God has not abandoned His people.
God Is With Us in Every Season
Many of us are walking through difficult seasons right now. In my own family, there are struggles and challenges that weigh heavily. And if we are honest, most families carry some form of hidden pain.
But this passage reminds us that we are never alone.
No matter the situation:
- God is present
- God is compassionate
- God is faithful
We can go to Him in every circumstance, whether in joy or in sorrow, and trust that He walks with us.
A Call to Remember
In both good times and bad, we are called to remember who God is.
When life is easy, we give thanks.
When life is difficult, we hold fast.
His love does not change.
His mercy does not fail.
His faithfulness does not waver.
Final Reflection
Whatever you are facing today, take a moment to pause and remember:
God’s love is everlasting.
His mercy is new this morning.
His faithfulness is great and beyond anything we can fully comprehend.
May we never forget to turn to Him in every season of life.
Great is His faithfulness.
