Where Have You Been?

Where Have You Been?

Save me, God, for the waters have reached my neck. I have sunk into the mire of the deep, where there is no foothold. I have gone down to the watery depths; the flood overwhelms me – Psalm 69

As we, as a nation, become more and more enmeshed in all that now gathers so violently around us, as we tilt our heads upwards and ask: Where Are You?, perhaps we shouldn’t be all that surprised to find that same question turned back towards us: Where Have You Been?

Words of peace have escaped my lips,

Even as my fingers have wept with blood.

My eyes turned away, then inward,

All the better to deny the other.

But the darkness reflected back reminded me

That no two truly diverge,

Imaged from above, an author of one.

No movement, no thought, no will

Ever annulled by dictate.

And choices freely made now override my pleas.

My astonishment at all of the brokenness

Offers up only pointed confirmation

Of my failure to timely gather my talent,

My time, my compassion, my mercy.

Or even, really, to begin my journey

Seeking your grace, aligning my ways.

Yes, the hour has grown late.

And I all too quickly have grown weary.

I fear that I will be dragged down

Without your loving grip.

Still, I reach out my hand, seeking yours.

And so now I wait.

Peace
