Robbie Coltrane, who played Rubeus Hagrid in the Harry Potter movies, has recently come to JK Rowling’s defense. Coltrane claims, “there’s a whole Twitter generation of people who hang around waiting to be offended.” He goes on to hint at the wrath of “cancel culture.” This is something that JK and 152 other figures who have very large platforms claimed in a letter to Harper’s Bazaar. They miss the reality and lack understanding of marginalized people.
“Many prominent writers and thinkers seem invested in the notion that simply facing strong public criticism is a threat to free speech,” This was written by Atlantic’s Hannah Giordis in a scathingly accurate review of the Harper’s letter. We are finding something that Trump and the co signers of this provincial definition of free speech have in common, the downtrodden should not have a voice. You are nothing more than an angry mob of peasant villagers and their voice is threatened by your opinions.
Deeper than that issue of elitist mentality is the largest flow expressed very well by Coltrane. We are merely offended, and we are looking for the next thing to be offended by.
When my child and I were denied service at a restaurant, we were not looking for that moment. We wanted buffalo wings.
That day a cashier at a drug store refused to give us an already filled prescription unless I dead-named my child, we just wanted the hormones. We were not looking to become a public spectacle in the middle of a pharmacy.
When I had a taxi driver rescue my child from their homecoming, I promise you I was not waiting for an opportunity to be mad at the school.
Speaking of school dances, I was certainly not waiting for a man to try to storm into my child’s dressing room to harm them. We just wanted to get a prom suit.
Jennifer Laude did not get murdered by Lance Corporal Pemberton in the Philippians just so we could all get offended.
This is a list that I could go on writing about for hours.
Rowling’s and Coltrane’s Misunderstood Offense
When you speak from a position of power in a disparaging manner about marginalized people, others have a right to speak out against them. I thought JK Rowling understood this in her once celebrated tweets in opposition to Trump and other aspiring dictators.
The perceived offense they see is truly a defense of those who do not have an equal voice. Often times, the voices in defense are the ones who do not have an equal voice in society. But for JK and over 100 other people with profitable voices, those peasant voices are a threat to the freedom of speech of the elite.
Horrible things happen to people in the margins every day. Rape, murder, assault, homelessness, poverty, depression without resources and the list goes on and on. Every day the people in the margins have to fight for the rights that should be accorded to them without question or opposition by any nations’s lawmakers or influentially wealthy.
Death threats and other horrible things are not what I defend. But like the looters who are not protesters, I am tired of people speaking out being equated with those who make threats. The least of these are not the worst of these.
Message to the Transgender Youth
Dr Maya Angelou once said, “So use that anger, yes, you write it, you paint it, you dance it, you march it, you vote it, you do everything about it. You talk it. Never stop talking it!” Do not let anyone tell you that you do not have a right to your voice. That voice can be in opposition of a parent who refuses to accept you, a teacher who won’t use your correct pronoun, an elected official who claims you have no rights or even an author who diminishes your validity of person-hood as you are. Never stop talking or writing.
