Joshua Harris recently went on Instagram to state he is no longer a Christian. He also apologized to the LGBT community. Is it enough? Joshua Harris published a book in 1997 that kick-started Purity Culture into Evangelical culture with rituals that feel like a glimpse of Gilead. He had a large role in creating an entire generation of young women shamed and robbed of their agency. He helped create a generation of manipulative young men and unhealthy fathers creating more… Read more

After 12 days of protests en masse in San Juan, Puerto Rico, Governor Ricardo Rosselló announced his resignation effective August 2nd. Despite the tens of thousands of protesters being largely peaceful, the authorities still used tear gas, rubber bullets and flash grenades on citizens. In 12 days the people of Puerto Rico reminded their fellow American citizens in 50 states, Washington DC, Guam, Northern Mariana Islands, and the U.S. Virgin Islands of the power of “we the people.” Why Were Puerto Rican… Read more

“I hate going to a church where they congratulate themselves for being heroic members of Reconciling Ministries while hurting me again and again. I’m their token gay kid for their bragging rights. Nothing more. I don’t have person-hood. Reconcile that!” Token’s voice shook with anger as we spoke. Token is a transgender teenager in a Reconciling Ministries Methodist Church. On July 4th I wrote an article that expressed how 3 queer teens felt about Pride flags outside UMC churches. There… Read more

In my last article about Billy Idol and Miley Cyrus, I received an unexpected bit of criticism. In a Progressive Christian Facebook Page I was told that my entire article is essentially moot. I didn’t put the qualifier “some Christians” when I spoke to what too many Christians do and say to LGBTQ+ youth. Too many Christians say immigrants need to be in concentration camps. Too many Christians chant send her back. Too many Christians hurt LGBTQ+ people. Too many… Read more

The Rebel Yell of the 70’s was founded in Punk Rock. It was controversial and not liked by the establishment. One of it’s stars that came out of London’s underground scene was Billy Idol. A rebel yell of the current generation is the unapologetic Miley Cyrus. Recently Billy F***ing Idol and Miley F***ing Cyrus were onstage together performing “Rebel Yell”. The pure energy of their performance delighted and inspired me and my child. This is an important moment. Being authentic in… Read more

To make David Bowie to be a saint or a sinner is to not understand that life exists in the nuance of neither. There are important messages in his art, but also his life. In many ways, Bowie has served as an example of acceptance, intersection, and living life on your terms. As a TransParent, as an ally, and as an artist, these are lessons I have needed since a young age. Discovering Bowie As a teenager and even… Read more

Instagram is often announcing new policies and programs to make their platform more safe. In my recent experience they have failed to protect a transgender teenager. This teenager was in immediate danger and their own precious voice was silenced while the attacker ran about freely with Instagram’s implicit endorsement. As someone who does photography on the side and used to be a photojournalist, I enjoy Instagram. It is an important marketing tool for me. I interact with photographers and models… Read more

“Chick-fil-A has more integrity than the UMC,” Tanner exclaimed, “They’re both friendly to me and they’ll take my money. But Chick-fil-A doesn’t wave the pride flag  saying they’re an ally knowing that I’m not equal in their corporation’s eyes. UMC churches wave that flag as a f***ing marketing tool to my death!” The coffeehouse fell silent as Tanner finished their statement. I was sitting at a table with 3 LGBTQ teens a few months ago to talk about the UMC’s… Read more

Chrissy the homeless transgender prostitute was a bit of a legend to the denizens of the night in Joliet. I had her in my cab a few times. It never went well. There came a point where we banned her from rides for the trouble she caused. One fateful night Chrissy and I would find ourselves in a mess. For those who have not read my book, “Night Moves: An Ex-Preacher’s Journey to Hell in a Taxi”, I drove a… Read more

In a moment of honest carelessness, a regrettable thing happened. I lost my identity. State ID, Social Security card, debit and credit cards and a few other important things. When this happens there is a feeling of shame, anger and fear. Fear of exposure and exploitation. There are healthy and unhealthy reactions to fear of exposure. Privacy and paranoia exist on the razor’s edge. In this moment of profound exposure, you find yourself reliant on others while keeping a watchful… Read more
