Univision, the nation’s largest Spanish language network, aired yesterday a presidential debate with the candidates from the Democratic party. As many would expect, immigration is the top issue for the Hispanic population when considering presidential candidates and so it was at the debate. I was unable to watch the debate, although I know the Democrats’ positions on those issues that concern Hispanics for the most part, so I’m sure I wasn’t going to be surprised. Although I read that one of the questions asked to the candidates was whether they would make Spanish the “second national language.” One thing is to promote the learning of foreign languages in this country (which is very much needed) and another is to ask such a question. That was a wrong choice of question, in my opinion.
At any rate, when I first heard about the debate in Univision, I asked myself: “what about the GOP candidates? When is that debate going to be?” Univision has already admitted that the GOP presidential debate scheduled for September 16th will be rescheduled to sometime in the fall. But… why is that? Well, only one candidate, Sen. John McCain, accepted the invitation. One has to wonder… is this because of his position of immigration that sets him apart from all the other candidates?
