Patriarch of Baghdad Says: Release Tareq Aziz

Patriarch of Baghdad Says: Release Tareq Aziz December 24, 2007

He was one of Saddam’s aids. He is a Christian. He is currently locked up in custody and in bad health. It is quite possible he will die in custody, and his family will not be allowed to see him before he dies. The Patriarch of Baghdad has once again called for his release.

Should the US show mercy to him? And if they should, what kind? Should he be released, or should he remain in US custody while allowing his immediate family in to see him to make sure he is being given proper care and respect?

Some people will say, “He sided with Saddam, and Saddam did cruel things like this, so he deserves it himself.”

But that is the kind of reasoning which Saddam used. If we follow it, we justify it and what Saddam did. And this will mean that sometime in the future we will have someone else calling for revenge for what people are doing now in Iraq. Mercy needs to be shown; it’s the only way to break the cycle of hate. Revenge is never the answer and justice without mercy is never real justice.
