The Obamessiah

The Obamessiah February 7, 2008

One thing I’ve heard over and over again this campaign season is someone saying that they like Ron Paul, but that his supporters really creep them out. I kind of feel the same way about Barack Obama and his supporters. Not all of them, mind you. There are no doubt plenty of people who support Obama and who can explain their support in a straightforward and sane way.

Here, for example, is a Barack Obama music video that’s been making the rounds:

When I watched the video, I was at first amused, yet the longer it went on the more disturbing it seemed. The substance-free emotionalism and mindless repetition of the phrase “yes we can” over and over and over made the gave the whole thing a rather cult-like feel. Obama is not Jim Jones, obviously. But he does seem to have built up quite the cult of personality, and as many others have noticed, he does seem to inspire an almost religious reverence in some of his fans, and when people pick their leaders based on this kind of mania, the results usually aren’t that pretty.

Put not your trust in princes, says the Bible. That’s good advice, especially during election season.
