At least for now, opposition, such as the kind given by Cardinal Justin Rigali, has helped stop a resolution which would have proclaimed Philadelphia a “pro-choice city.”

This, at least, is a positive development, but we should remember that a resolution in favor for this title was originally passed with a 9-8 margin. Moreover, we must remember this does not mean abortion will suddenly end in Philadelphia.

While we must pray that this is the start of a rather positive trend, we must do more than pray, but work. We need to create in our society a new-found respect for human dignity. We must recognize this dignity in people in all walks of life, and at all stages of life, in all of their backgrounds, wherever they come from, even if it requires us to sacrifice our selfish needs and desires in the process. Until we do so, opposition to abortion will remain solely on the level of political rhetoric.
