I was only joking when I referred to the walking stick Obama received as a “terrorist” walking stick. Well, my joke was not too far from the truth, apparently. Do you remember the fist bump between Michelle and Barack Obama last Tuesday? Yes, apparently it is a “terrorist” fist jab. Fox News anchor E.D. Hill asked the following question when referring to the fist jab the Obama’s shared this past week: “A fist bump? A pound? A terrorist fist jab?... Read more
Hans Urs von Balthasar, despite the fact he didn’t want to label himself as a theologian, is one of the most important theologians of the 20th century. There are, of course, a considerable number of people who can, and should be, given this label, but when one considers the number of people who have engaged theology in the 20th century, it is still a rather exclusive list.[1]Von Balthasar is one of the most difficult theologians to engage, in part because... After weeks of bad news, things turned Barbara Wagner’s way this week. Last month her lung cancer, in remission for about two years, was back. After her oncologist prescribed a cancer drug that could slow the cancer growth and extend her life, Wagner was notified that the Oregon Health Plan wouldn’t cover it. It would cover comfort and care, including, if she chose, doctor-assisted suicide. Then on Monday a representative of the pharmaceutical company Genentech called Wagner and offered the... Read more
The simplistic guitar riff that characterizes the song; the portrayal of technology that facilitates the dehumanization of images; expressionless human faces; forms of violence; escapism and flight…what, if anything, are the following music videos representing? If art is a commentary on humanity, what are we seeing/hearing here? Coldplay – “Don’t Panic” (more…) Read more
Fr. Pfleger will return to the St Sabina’s on June 16th, with “no restrictions” except, of course, ones which are imposed upon all priests, that they are now allowed to discuss political candidates at the pulpit. Read the rest here. I certainly hope other priests understand the point which has been made with Fr. Pfleger, and all abuse of their priestly position, from any side of the political spectrum, will be treated equally. Read more
If Europeans had a voice in the US presidential election: Germany: 67-7, Obama-McCain. Italy 70-15, Obama-McCain. United Kingdom, 49-14, Obama-McCain. France 65-8, Obama-McCain. This is probably no surprise, but still worth emphasizing. The issue? Codpiece diplomacy, of course. There is a feeling, a hope, that Obama will give them reasons to admire the US once again. Of course, the denizens of codpiece diplomacy are alive and kicking. Consider this morsel from Thomas Sowell: “when all is said and done, Senator... Read more
Part I Part II Part III Part IV-1 Part IV-2 “The public,” writes Orrin Klapp, “indeed, is usually ignorant of its heroes. There are several reasons for this: First, at the time of emergence of a hero the public usually has little opportunity for making direct observations; second, actions have a permanent advantage over traits in commanding interest and attention; third, the public usually infers the traits of a hero from the thing he has done.“[1] What Orrin Klapp wrote... Previous in Series: Just the Facts Imagine a man, let’s call him Sam, who is a believer in astrology. Sam thinks that you can tell a lot about a person based on the date of his birth. He is fond of ascribing various personality traits and other characteristics to people based on their astrological sign, and will often make generalizations about people based on their signs, such as “Leos are arrogant” or “Scorpios are good problem solvers.” (I neither know... Via Catholics in the Public Square, I came across a rather fascinating generalization offered by the usually dependable Fr. Joseph Fessio which purports there are no incongruities between Catholic social teaching and President Bush’s social policies. You read that right. Here’s the snippet: (more…) Read more
