Both Clinton and Obama gave good speeches, Clinton surprisingly so. Obama started off slowly, and never reached the rhetorical highs of the Iowa speech. But he got better as the speech progressed and made a very important point that it was “never OK” to equivocate on torture. Good for you, Barack. His pitch is clearly based on the idea that his movement transcends politics, and that it is a movement based on hope, based on communal effort, based on unity,... Read more
What many Americans have suspected has been confirmed. The CIA has used the torture method known as water-boarding on three high-profile prisoners. This admission comes on the heels of U.S. National Intelligence Director Mike McConnell’s statement that water-boarding “would be torture.” Catholics who listen to the Church know what she teaches about torture. Looks like Canada was right. Read more
H/T to the Christian Radical blog, a Catholic Worker information service run by the CW community of Vancouver. Washington, DC– On Ash Wednesday, February 6th Catholics for an End to the War in Iraq (CEWI), the Dorothy Day Catholic Worker, TASSC and Jonah House will commemorate the day by praying for forgiveness and depositing ashes at the White House. “The use of ashes at the White House is a sign of atonement for President Bush’s war in Iraq, his continued... Read more
I suppose we ought to make note of it here on Vox Nova. Here is what I’m looking at today: What is the difference between Democratic and Republican Party votes in Tennessee? This state could very easily move into the Democratic column in 2008. Add Missouri into this mix as well. Missouri may actually prove useful in discerning a Catholic vote. McCain took 44% of the Catholic Republican vote in Missouri. Catholics made up 20% of the Republican electorate. Catholics... Read more
The colleges and gardens of Oxford, which I was recently blessed enough to visit for the third time, are so beautifully arranged and constructed that one can inexplicably sense the soul uplift. The environment almost demanded prayerful reflection. It was as if I was an extension of the worshipful praise that was channeled through the skill of those who started the chapels and rooms nearly one thousand years ago. There are places where large stone walls build by the Romans... Read more

And this is one of the many things that scares me about McCain: pro-war. Remember what Cardinal Ratzinger said a couple years ago? Q: Does the Anglo-American war against Iraq fit the canons of a “just war”? Cardinal Ratzinger: The Pope expressed his thought with great clarity, not only as his individual thought but as the thought of a man who is knowledgeable in the highest functions of the Catholic Church. Of course, he did not impose this position as... Read more
From CathNews: The Australian Catholic Film Office (ACFO) has awarded its 2007 Film of the Year to Dee McLachlan’s The Jammed. Director of the ACFO and jury chair, Jesuit Fr Richard Leonard said 2007 was one of the strongest years in many for Australian films. “The Jammed, The Home Song Stories and Romulus, My Father were among the best,” Fr Leonard said. “The jury felt that The Jammed was a singularly courageous piece of cinema. Even though the extremely violent... Read more
Since I’m not a lawyer, my understanding could be and probably is fallacious. My understanding was that the State in which a marriage occurred was the one that had standing to adjudicate disputes regarding marital rights. Pursuant to that, a court could accept jurisdiction on a case if a) both parties consented, b) both parties agreed to be governed by the laws of that court and c) the relationship would have or could have otherwise been created in like manner... Read more
