Before turning the page, decide whether the grinding axe is coming from the left or right: Reform cannot begin until the corruption is acknowledged. And since the American hierarchy apparently cannot or will not recognize the corruption with itself, other Catholics must call the bishops to account and demand the sort of responsible pastoral leadership that the American Church has not seen for years. Under these circumstances lay Catholics who criticize their bishops are not showing their disrespect for the... Read more

I was reminded of this Jim Wallis mantra this morning when I read about Bush’s proposed 2009 budget. He wants to increase spending by 19 percent on “border security and border enforcement” while cutting education and Medicare. On the latter, he proposes to simply freeze payments to doctors, hospitals, and other health care providers, oblivious to the fact that Medicare provides cheaper health care than its private sector alternatives. On the latter, Nancy Pelosi suggested cutting subsidies to Medicare Advantage,... Read more

It’s a slow day at work today, so I’ve been tuned into The Laura Ingraham Show. She sounds desperate in terms of Mitt Romney’s candidacy, continually pointing out that he’s lived his life in the “best” way (i.e., living conservative values in family and business). This week, Mukasey clarified his position… sort of. In a letter to the Senate Judiciary Committee, Mukasey writes: I have been briefed on the CIA interrogation program. A limited set of methods is currently authorized for use in that program. I have been authorized to disclose publicly that... Read more

Part VIII-2: The Christian Response God became man so that man can become God. While theologians should recognize this famous saying of St Athanasius, it might confuse the non-theologian. What does it mean? How can man become God? Isn’t this the lie of Satan? God is immortal, humanity is mortal. God became man to make mortal man immortal “For He was made man that we might be made God; and He manifested Himself by a body that we might receive the idea... Read more

Whenever I talk about the pernicious influence of Calvinism on American culture and politics, I am often told that I do not know what I talking about. The point, however, is not to discuss the doctrines of Calvinism in a some speculative theological manner, but to examine the impact of the pervasive derivative Calvinism (Cardinal George calls it “cultural Calvinism”) that shapes America in so many ways.
