You have undoubtedly seen the recent news from Gaza. In response to rocket attacks, Israel basically cut off all access to the Gaza strip, home to 1.5 million Palestinians in situations of dire poverty. Israel closed the border even to imports of humanitarian supplies. The UN announced it could not supply food to 860,000 residents. Oxfam claimed that less than a third of Gaza’s water supply pumps still had fuel. More than half have no electricity. Remember this comes on... Read more

How long will Catholics continue to be duped by the Pro-life crumbs tossed at us by the GOP? There is a great post on this at the America blog: The annual March for Life has come and gone. One of its more bizarre qualities is the way GOP presidents participate: by recorded message or telephone hook-up, but never in person. I imagine some of you will be entertained by Goldbergs’ writing on Father Coughlin, the wildly popular priest of the Great Depression who was pushed into obscurity when he thought he had more power than he did. This is as good a place as any to tackle the enduring myth that Long and Coughlin were conservatives. It is a bedrock dogma of all enlightened liberals that Father Charles Coughlin was an execrable right-winger (Long is a more complicated case, but... Read more

If you remember, I asked everyone to pray for Pam’s 2 year old son last week. He HAS been diagnosed with Leukemia but it is the ALL type which has a high cure rate. He has to endure one intensive month of chemo, though, and she asks for prayers. He also has had to undergo numerous transfusions and she says that the Blood Bank did not have enough of the blood they needed for him. Good reminder for those who... Read more

This week in the Times, the Freakonomics boys have an article about how government action intended to help a particular group can end up hurting that group. Two of the three examples given in the article (the ADA and the Endangered Species Act) are fairly standard. Their third example, though, is biblical, and therefore might be of particular interest to some of Vox Nova’s readers. (more…) Read more

There was an article the other day in the paper that pointed out while we in the West were shocked by the outburst of violence in Kenya, there were warning signs. According to the article Leaflets calling for ethnic killings mysteriously appeared before the voting. Politicians with both the government and opposition parties gave speeches that stoked ethnic hatreds. And local tribal chiefs plotted attacks on their rivals, according to some of them and their followers. This news deeply disturbed... Read more
