Don’t have sex. You will get pregnant and die. November 16, 2014

Hey everyone! I’m totally not being a hipster and sitting in a Starbucks as I type this. JT shared this story with me the other day and I HAD to talk about it. According to this article by Jason Heap from, teachers in an Arizona school district are ripping pages out of Biology textbooks that have to do with sex.

Why, you may ask? Just your friendly neighborhood Alliance Defending Freedom organization showering people with ignorance yet again. This is the same group that is bravely fighting that horrific “War on Christmas” and has articles on their website encouraging their readers to stand in opposition to marriage equality. Wait what’s the name of their group again? Alliance Defending what?

The ADF voted along with the Gilbert Public School District to only present childbirth and adoption as alternatives to abortion. Because of this, the schools in that district ran into trouble with the “Campbell Biology: Concepts & Connections” textbook that dares to inform students about birth control, vasectomies & tubal ligations, and abortion inducing drugs. Teachers are now allowed by the district to physically rip out pages of the textbook that talk about this so that the students are only taught abstinence.

WHAT? This is insanity. Why is this religious group having so much influence on what is being taught in public schools? This whole story is unsettling for a multitude of reasons. In case these people haven’t noticed, teaching abstinence only doesn’t work. Teenagers have sex. *gasp* It happens. It is reality, and teaching them not to have sex doesn’t make it stop happening, it just ensures that they’ll be unprepared and that their sexual experiences are filled with guilt. Because people are uninformed about contraceptives, they get pregnant easier, which only leads to more abortions..isn’t abortion what they’re trying to avoid? I know, it makes no sense. It’s not about trying to protect young people, it’s about scaring them and shaming their sexuality. Scare people and shame all you want in your churches, but public schools should be a place where these people don’t get to push their agenda. Especially in an honors Biology class, students should be absorbing knowledge, not ignorance. Adults in position to make these educational decisions need to realize that teenagers are going to make their own decisions about their bodies, and that the best thing to do is to make sure they’re as informed as possible, so that when the time comes, they are protected and safe.

Stories like this make my eye twitch..but the only way to stop the madness is to draw attention to it.

"Are you *sure* that's a clarification?"

Am I evil for pointing out ..."
"Is that a strawman i see you building over there?Nah... i'm not special. Only difference ..."
