Holy crap the news is slow today. Hey, good job, world! Way to not have a whole lot of shitty things going on for 24 hours.
So let’s hit up the inbox. Here’s one from Jason:
I love you more than anyone alive does. God is real and exists. Jesus loved you so much that he gave his life for you. That is more love than anyone on earth will ever give you.
do you want proof that god exists?? I love you as much as god loves you even though you are an atheist.only a supernatural force can cause someone like to me to show such love
I know that you must have thought or feelings, even brief ones whether or not god is real or not (it’s human to have them) Just give in to them. It’s god’s way of trying to bring you back. You are on Patheos a site that tries to bridge atheism and christianity, take the next step on that bridge and convert to christ
I love all gays on earth (not that way),I love them so much that i try to keep them from going to hell. You gay rights supporters are leading gays on a path to hell.Is that what you want kid??
Being gay is a sin and is wrong. God knows better than all of us what is and isn’t good for us and he knows that being gay is bad for us. That’s why he doesn’t want us doing it.If the creator of everything says being gay is wrong,I’d take his word over the words of his creation bro
Hey Jason. Thanks for the message.
I love you more than anyone alive does.
Do you, now? How do you measure that? Because I measure it in time spent with someone, care given to someone, the level of trust we share, etc. Take my wife, for instance, she cares for me when I’m sad, makes time for me in her busy life, and even gives me passionate kisses. You, on the other hand, have only sending me a message telling me to come over to your religion to your credit.
Not only is this claim wholly and flagrantly wrong, it’s insulting to the people in my life who really do love me. If you think you love me more than these people you have no concept what love is. If you think sending me a self-interested email is a grander expression of love than raising me, your church has warped you.
God is real and exists. Jesus loved you so much that he gave his life for you.
First thing’s first, god does not exist and Jesus, if he existed, had no reason to die for me or anybody else. There’s no evidence to confirm any of this.
But to indulge you, even if this were somehow true god could have easily altered his rules without killing somebody. Or hell, he could’ve just not made rules like “kill people for working on the wrong day” in the first place. Personally, I will never believe in a book or worship a god which, at any point, demands I kill other people. Can you say the same?
That is more love than anyone on earth will ever give you.
Wrong. If I had been there when Jesus supposedly died I would’ve tried to save his life. I wouldn’t want his sacrifice.
do you want proof that god exists??
Absolutely. That would make this a productive dialogue. Give me your absolute best proof. Hit me. I’m ready.
I love you as much as god loves you even though you are an atheist.only a supernatural force can cause someone like to me to show such love
Yes, without a supernatural force how could somebody possibly send me an email dripping with self-interest? Clearly love for *me*, not for yourself or your church, is the only possible explanation.
And what’s this “even though you are an atheist” nonsense? If you think I’m less worthy of love because I’m not sold on the idea of a guy rising from the dead 2,000 years ago, well, you may want to re-think the “nobody loves you more tha me” line from earlier. It’s one thing to think a person’s beliefs are ill-supported and wrong (I think this of yours), but to dehumanize them as a result is pretty shitty.
I know that you must have thought or feelings, even brief ones whether or not god is real or not (it’s human to have them)
Just give in to them.
You don’t seem to realize a person can entertain the possibility that something exists (death eaters, unicorns, god, vampires, sensible Republican candidates, etc.) without concluding that they actually do. I’ve entertained god’s existence and found that the people trying to argue for it (like yourself) have nothing but most transparently bad reasons imaginable.
It’s god’s way of trying to bring you back.
You’re telling me that god, with all the wisdom in the universe, contemplated the best way to reach me and concluded it wasn’t by showing up on my doorstep, or by equipping you with a good argument for his existence, or by leaving scientific evidence for his existence like he did for dinosaurs, but by giving me the default wonder about whether or not he exists? God seems to be more worried about making me wonder if god or vampires exist than with making sure the answer is unequivocally “yes.”
You are on Patheos a site that tries to bridge atheism and christianity, take the next step on that bridge and convert to christ
I love all gays on earth (not that way)
I’ll bet you love them enough to forcibly take away their autonomy with regard to who they marry. Strangely, this is the same thing people who hate gays are trying to do. Fancy that.
And let’s remember: you think the greatest expression of love is sending people an email insisting they convert to your religion. Gonna go out on a limb here and suggest maybe you’re not the person to be lecturing other people on who they can or can’t love.
I love them so much that i try to keep them from going to hell.
Yeah, if you loved them as much as god you’d set them on fire forever for the crime of being who they are and making another person happy. Man, are you ever selling me on your religion.
You gay rights supporters are leading gays on a path to hell.
That’s like the mob saying if I don’t give them $1,000 each month they’ll burn my house down, someone saying I should call the police, and then you saying that person is leading me on a path to having my house burned down.
If god made a hell for normal, caring people to go to, the problem isn’t with the normal caring people, it’s with god. You’re blaming the people giving other people orgasms and caring for them throughout their life (this is real love, btw) and worshiping the being who wants to immolate them eternally. Is there a single reason to think you’re anything but twisted for this?
Is that what you want kid??
People who love me treat me with respect. You just sent me a few arguments for god’s existence so infantile they could’ve been written in crayon and capped it off by calling a 33 year-old “kid.” Good job.
Being gay is a sin and is wrong.
We have very different criteria for what is wrong. For me it’s based on well-being. If you increase people’s well-being/happiness, you’re probably doing something very good. If you make people suffer arbitrarily, this is the very definition of evil.
Conversely, you seem to think that no matter how happy something makes people if your killjoy religion says not to do it then the happiness-makers, not your religion, are somehow morally wrong. So yeah, being gay is a sin according to your religion. You seem to think that’s a reason for me (and gay people) to adopt your religion rather than to reject it as laughably lacking in compassion.
God knows better than all of us what is and isn’t good for us and he knows that being gay is bad for us.
Then he should come down here and tell us that. Countless men in countless religions have claimed to have received divine commands from god. You don’t believe them with every other religion and I don’t believe them in yours, not only because it’s clear that people are capable of telling such lies, but because any being with half a fucking neuron wouldn’t write the barbaric and scientifically inaccurate stuff in the bible. The earth coming before the stars? Unless god is big on trolling his “chosen” recipients, it’s probably just people writing down their own opinions and then swearing up and down that the wisest being in existence told them something we now know to be cosmically stupid.
That’s why he doesn’t want us doing it. If the creator of everything says being gay is wrong,I’d take his word over the words of his creation bro
If the words of his “creation” are not to be trusted don’t you think it’s kind of strange that’s his chosen delivery system? God didn’t really think this through, did he. Tell you what, pray to god and tell him he should hire me as a consultant. I’m not cheap, but I’d do a way better job than he’s doing with all this.
As for you, Jason, you don’t love me. You love yourself and think asking me and gay people to be like you while calling us wrong-doers, kid, etc. is anything other than an expression of a special brand of arrogance equaled only by thinking that you, and you alone, know the will of god. I’ll pass on your offer. I prefer a life of measured humility with people who think love means caring for someone else, not just trying to dictate their personal life.
Thanks for the email.
