Meet Brent Randall, a candidate for City Council in Goshen, IN and a Republican:
Randall, a local sports broadcaster and businessman, is running to represent the citizens on Goshen, Indiana on the city council. Goshen does not have an LGBT civil rights nondiscrimination law, and Randall says he opposes one, claiming LGBT people are already protected by law, which is incorrect.
“Randall has walked his party’s line in voicing his opposition to adding the words ‘sexual orientation’ and ‘gender identity’ to the city’s civil rights ordinance, noting that he feels members of the LGBT community are currently protected under existing law and an amendment is not needed locally,” local news site The Goshen News reports. Randall’s Democratic opponent, Adam Scharf, “has voiced strong support for such added protections for the city’s LGBT community.”
“I still believe in my heart of hearts,” Randall claims, “that our gay and lesbian communities are protected currently under the law.”
Ok, first off he is 100% wrong: neither federal law or Indiana law protect LGBT people from discrimination.
Second off…an anti-gay rights Republican? Better check his closet for…yup:
News broke late last week that [Randall] has an active profile on an online dating site that boasts it’s the “world’s largest gay hookup site.”
But this story is different. No, not different in that an anti-gay Republican got caught trying to penetrate another man’s anus, but that this one just owned up to it with seemingly no shame:
“My life has changed a lot over the last six years since my divorce,” Randall said. “… (The profile page is) still active. I do check it. I do talk to people. I’ve never met anybody from that profile. I do enjoy meeting new people of all different walks of life. …
“I don’t even know if I consider myself bisexual or not. I just experimented a little since I was single again.” …
“In the back of my mind I knew that profile was out there,” Randall said. “I really didn’t think it would come out. … It’s a bridge I really didn’t want to cross. The other side of that is I’ve been dating women too. It’s just something I’ve opened myself up for.”
And that was that. So…I’m honestly not even sure the guy’s a hypocrite. It’s not like he’s saying gay/bisexual dudes shouldn’t be allowed to marry or date and I can’t find an instance of him saying so.
But he’s a Republican and insisting legal protections for LGBT people exist where they clearly don’t, and clearly finds men attractive. Yeah, I’m hacked off at him for working against protections that are very much needed, even if he hasn’t experienced discrimination himself. But at the same time…I don’t know, I kind of pity him. He’s been posting bible verses to his social media, so it’s likely he’s entrenched in a religion that’s helped him internalized shame toward LGBT people like himself. That’s gotta be a lot to live with.
This whole situation is just weird.
