It’s coming to light that the San Bernardino killers were inspired by ISIS (though probably not directed by ISIS, they just saw what ISIS did/stood for and thought it looked like a good idea):
The woman who helped carry out the shooting in San Bernardino, Calif., on Wednesday had pledged allegiance to the Islamic State in a Facebook posting, according to federal law enforcement officials.
There’s no evidence the group directed the woman, Tashfeen Malik, and her husband Syed Rizwan Farook, to launch the attacks, which killed 14 and wounded 21, said the officials, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because the investigation is continuing.
This knowledge actually changes very little.
Stopping refugees from Syria from entering the country wouldn’t have stopped this as Farook was an American citizen.
Sending troops to Syria wouldn’t have stopped this as, again, Farook was an American citizen.
Just like Robert Dear Jr., the man who shot up the Colorado Springs Planned Parenthood last weekend, these people were contaminated by a bad idea and moved to kill on account of it. Hell, these people may have even been perfectly sane, which means more attention to mental healthcare (which America desperately needs) may not have even prevented this.
So what would help? Less bad ideas in the world. Bad ideas like “god before family” is about the only way I can envision parents dropping a baby off with grandma to go kill people for not living in the way your religion declares they must (though they were nice enough to throw you a baby shower). Oh, and gun control laws. Because it doesn’t matter if the motivation is Jesus (Robert Dear Jr.), Muhammad (apparently these two), or just wanting to rob someone (anybody, including atheists, because bad people exist everywhere and religion doesn’t alter that), gun control laws are proven to help.
