A few days ago I had the opportunity to sit down with Michael Shermer in his home to discuss his new book, The Moral Arc: How Science and Reason Lead Humanity Toward Truth, Justice, and Freedom, which comes out tomorrow. When I heard a few months ago that this book was coming out the first thing that caught my attention, of course, was the title. As a Christian pastor I frequently referred to this expression, popularized by the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., “The arc of the moral universe is long, but it bends towards justice.” For years this expression fired my passion for social justice and fueled my hope that humanity was somewhere along this arc and that God was tending to it’s trajectory. Since losing my faith I have wondered if there is an arc at all. The suggestion by someone like Michael Shermer that there is an arc of sorts is inspiring. So, on this 86th anniversary of Dr. King’s birth, here is our conversation about his new book, which comes out tomorrow. I hope you’ll check out this video and then pick up his book and engage with it!
