Many Members, One Body: Reflections on Romans 12:1-8

When we hear this story, we probably place ourselves in Jocelyn's role, but we could just as easily be in Frank's role. We are all members of one body, and God cares for each of us and desires for us to care for one another. God yearns for us to be grateful for others' gifts, to feel their pain and to participate in their healing.

Our lives as disciples of Jesus Christ are a journey from seeing ourselves as independent bodies to seeing ourselves as members of the body of Christ. It is a process of living into our identity: not as self-contained bodies, but as members of Christ's body. We grow into that identity as we grow in empathy for other members of Christ's body. When another member of the body suffers, we feel it too and offer encouragement and support. When all members of a group relate to one another in this way, the result is a healthy body!

"For as in one body we have many members, and not all the members have the same function, so we, who are many, are one body in Christ, and individually we are members one of another" (Rom. 12:4-5).
