At some point, you have to make the choice between anesthesia and action.
Anesthesia is comforting; it's good to be reassured that things aren't as bad as they seem. Action is risky; you might try to chase after your dreams and fail. But anesthesia only works for a short time, and eventually you have to either perform surgery on your life or watch it slip into a coma.
How do you go about making a change? I'm not telling anyone to abandon their religion. You can keep on worshiping the same gods you already worship, holding the same beliefs and doing the same ceremonies. But if the results are not everyday happiness, it's time to make a change.
The change I chose to make is radical. I'm quitting my job, leaving my home and walking across two continents to meet the gods. Why? Because it's a lifelong dream and it fills me with happiness every day to know that I'm finally doing it. I don't have a secret that makes it easy, I just plan carefully for what I can control and prepare myself to face what I can't.
When I gave up being Pagan and started following the Heroic Life, nothing obvious changed. I still worship Lugh and the Irish gods, I still meditate and I still celebrate the same holidays. But now, instead of isolating my spirituality as a practice for those special occasions, it defines everything I do.
