We Need a “Diverse Majority” Party

We Need a “Diverse Majority” Party November 9, 2016

Melinda was thinking about this; I suggested the name. Obviously we are dealing with a “dominant minority” that consists of straight, white, “Christian” men, those who, decades ago, were the majority. The problem is not with every one of them, of course, just a great many of them. The idea is to work for a coalition of ALL the people whom the egregious Mr. Trump appears to hate. Equally obviously, “business as usual” is over. Politics as usual is also over. Why were the Democrats and the pollsters so clueless?  A very different sort of politics is needed.

So who would make up this Diverse Majority? Using pretty good government statistics, in the USA there are now 126M (126,000,000) adult women, 119M adult men. (That is, there are 7M women who have little chance of finding a husband. However, considering how badly all too many men treat women, I am somewhat surprised that any women are willing to marry men at all.)

So all women would be the major element in this Diverse Majority;  that gives 126M to start. Next we have “non-white” men; that adds 26M. Then add men who don’t belong to a Christian church:  32M. Then we have (L)GBT men; another  4.9M (at least). Total: 189M, i.e., about 77% of total adult population.

That’s not even factoring in Hispanic men (different dimension) or allowing for overlapping categories, e.g., gay Black Jews, but neither of those adjustments would change the overall percentage much.

I note that the “non-Christian” percentage includes 4% for non-Christian religions and 23% for people who don’t belong to any church.  Of the 4%, 2.8M belong to New Religious Movements, and that 23% probably includes people who don’t count their coven as a church; so an order-of-magnitude for the number of Pagans has to be at minimum about 1,000,000, which is more than the membership of 27 other religious groups in America. It is ten times greater than the number of Quakers, who have been the greatest champions of religious rights in all of American history. They will be with us, as will most of the Unitarians. As will many individual men in the major Christian churches—because our problem is not with the genuine Christians; it is with the fake Christians, who seem to know nothing about what Rabbi Jesus taught.

Hence, statistically, three out of every four people you meet will have at least one reason to opt into the Diverse Majority.  What do you do about that? Reach out. Grass roots organizing. Gather your neighbors for mutual support and brainstorming. Reach out to similar groups when you find them.  Ask a Muslim woman to come explain her religion to your group. Ask a police officer to come discuss the problems he is facing. Share your stories. My family fits the demographics for four different reasons. Be openminded. We cannot predict where any of this will go.
