This might come as a surprise

But China is not a free country.  Freedom is, as often as not, the exception rather than the rule. Our convoluted system of checks and balances was embraced by the Founding Fathers precisely because they did not have blind faith in human nature to get it right.   Even around the world today, freedom as Americans understand it is a luxury many do not enjoy.

Hence the concerns that some in America have with the growing trend of rethinking what is a constitutional right where religion and speech are concerned.  Not that America would end up looking like China or the USSR or some other Communist state.  We’re America.  Whatever happens, we won’t look like any other state when we rise or fall.
