Quote of the Day (John Walton)

“We should not expect the Bible to answer the questions that arise from our own time and culture. Genesis was written to Israelites and addressed human origins in light of the questions they would have had. We should not try to make modern science out of the information that we are given, but should try to understand the affirmations that the text is making in its own context.”

I think that myth is the only way to understand truth in Scripture,, if one wants to to follow Scripture at all…as it is not a literalizing of the Kingdom, of defining sin (other than what is legal), raising children, realting to you spouse, etc…

Great quote! The Bible is a good book; it might even be a great book; but it is certainly not the ONLY book and people who treat it as such do it a disservice.

Modern fundamentalists are a bit like people claiming that the story of Pandora’s Box was ever intended to be a factual account of how evils got into the world.

What question is asked is important. Science asks the question “HOW?” while faith asks the question “WHY?”. The bible is a book of faith! It is not a book of science, history, legal law or psychology. While the bible contains all of those elements as the people understood them at the various times as the bible grew from oral tradition, wirtten tradition and then accepted as scripture, yet the bible remains a book of faith that answers the question, “WHY?” Thus the Creation Story is about WHY creation happened is because the ONE God is CREATOR. The Creation Story does not tell HOW creation happened, it tells WHY God created. Chief among the faith explanation is that the Creator God is ONE God and the days of creation God created what was worshipped by religions that had many gods. So, Why worship the sun or moon gods, Creator God created the sun and moon. Why worhip animals, trees, nature, or human dieties, the Creator God created all of these, thus faith is saying that the Creator God is the ONE God and all of creation bows to the ONE God. Evolution speaks to the HOW question of science while the bible speaks to the WHY question of faith. Faith’s understanding of the WHY of the bible boils down to: “we love because God first loved us and our responsibility as people of faith is to Love God and Love our neighbor by treating others the way we would like to be treated, as Jesus has taught us.” This is what I have preached for thrity nine years of pastoral ministry as a Disciples of Christ pastor, retiring in 2006, but still believing that the bible is a book of faith that asks WHY?

‘The Creation Story does not tell HOW creation happened, it tells WHY God created.’You mean that when it says creation happened because God spoke, it is not saying how creation happened? And when it never says God created Z because of reason X, it is giving us the reason why God created Z?And when Genesis says ‘He also made the stars.’, the author never intended that as a claim that it was Yahweh who made the stars?
